“People gripe too much. Really it was in a block of “America” type songs along with Ragged old Flag and America the Beautiful, nobody introduced as any kind of anthem. Really the only people who made a big deal about it are the folks complaining. It’s a pretty song, deal.”
You embrace being obtuse as though it was a virtue
Obtuseness is whining about a pretty song because somebody 100 years ago said it was the black national anthem. Have you even looked at the lyrics? Would you object to it if it had any other label?
It could be the prettiest song in the whole world, but people should not be asked or expected to stand up for it AS IF it were the national anthem.
Because it isn’t.
See?
Good point. Have the Codetalkers sing the National Anthem, in Navajo.
They have earned the right and privilege.
And they weren’t. They didn’t intro it. They didn’t ask people to stand. They didn’t call it out in any way. If it wasn’t for all the kerfuffle nobody who didn’t know the song would have known it was any demographic’s “national anthem”. It was just the 2nd of 3 patriotic songs before teams came out.
Sums it up.
Not anymore. It’s “The Black National Anthem” now.
I’m part Pottawatomi.....But I am American thru and thru.
“I used to be a nut watching all football games. Not any more. Don’t watch any now.
What do you do with all your newfound free time??? It must be very liberating.”
I quit watching the NFL, too, when the kneeling started. I don’t miss it at all... and yes, I have much more free time, now.
“True to our native land”
Is that the USA? or Africa?
That said, everyone should reject the premise of a "black" national anthem.
On the very face of it (regardless of lyrics being okay or not) it's divisive, racist, non-inclusive, and separatist.
THE very last thing we need in a mutually respectful and successful society and nation.
I am not familiar with this song, but I don’t find the words to be objectionable. But, I think Progressives might find the references to God to be objectionable.
Lift Every Voice and Sing
Words: James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938)
Music: J. Rosamond Johnson (1873-1954)
(from church hymnal)
That’s cruel.
LOL 😳
I was wondering why the halftime entertainer they chose hadn’t performed live in 7 years? I knew it would be crap so I tended to my grill outside.
If you believe that, I’ve got a bridge to sell you.
Oh wait, your home state already bought one.
I watched it. I didn’t even recognize the song until it was half way through. You got any proof it happened some other way?
They have Cinco-de-mayo. They drink and get drunk on their national party day!
Lol!
You completely miss the point of the objections. The reason that the National Anthem is played is to express a unifying tribute to our country. To have a ‘second’ anthem dedicated to one race of people conveys just the opposite.
