CNN Chief Business Correspondent Christine Romans had a hissy fit over House Republicans voting to gut the $80 billion IRS funding following their pledge to nix plans to hire 87,000 new employees over the next ten years.
Romans flailed at House GOP “pass[ing] a bill based on a demonstrable falsehood. There is no army of 87,000 IRS agents coming after American families and small businesses.” Of course, Romans said nothing about how 57.3% of the estimated “86,852 new IRS” hires, “(49,754 in total) would be assigned to enforcement,” according to The Heritage Foundation. Romans instead chose to gaslight on the Jan. 12 edition of CNN This Morning: “That’s not what this is. It’s crucial new funding to get the IRS up to speed. There are 1.4 million backlog, right now, of last year’s tax returns that still need to be done.”
This is misleading. As The Heritage Foundation noted in another analysis, “[t]he lion’s share of the new funding, $45.6 billion, will go to enforcement activities like new audits, litigation, asset monitoring, and collections.”
But Romans proceeded to screech at “House Republicans saying, ‘There’s this army going to come after small business.’ No, it’s about being able to audit the super rich and just get the job done!” But a 2022 Government Accountability Office report noted that “[f]rom fiscal years 2010 to 2021, the majority of the additional taxes IRS recommended from audits came from taxpayers with incomes below $200,000.” Why would the IRS all of a sudden break that pattern after 11 years to just target the so-called “super rich” now? Critical thinking is hard, eh Romans?

CNN is just another 3-letter agency of the Federal Government! The CNN talking heads probably each carry CIA badges and this is NOT hyperbole!
;>)
i don’t want government to expand in any capacity, even to control our southern border. Send the military to defend the border, and let them use their weapons. The invasion will quickly stop.
CNN, aka, government cheerleaders.
“There are 1.4 million backlog, right now, of last year’s tax returns that still need to be done.”
Sounds like a good argument that we need to simplify the tax code, if the IRS can’t even manage to process all the returns in 365 days.
I have always said, the so called RINO’s are better than any democrat.
Come on man! Can’t simplify tax code. How will special interests benefit if tax deductions were simplified? we got to keep all special interests and lobbyists well-funded and rewarded. Thay are the ones keeping politicians in business.
Be careful what you wish for, lest your tax form will look like this.....
Line 1. How Much Did You Make Last Year? ___________
Line 2. Subtract 0 from Line 1, this is what you owe. _________
Democrats love the IRS and love to control and tax people, notice not one democrat in the last 50 years ever voted or proposed to lower taxes. Remember obama democrat Lois Lerner, went after conservatives and conservative groups, since she was a democrat, nothing happened to her.
Performative politics...it won’t get past the Senate.
They can go back to their constituents at election time and say ‘See I tried”...that’s how the game is played. I hope they don’t waste 2 years on investigations that will generate TV time but produce little of consequence. What they can accomplish is going to be questionable anyway given the narrow margins in both houses. I wish it were otherwise but it isn’t.
and we are about to dump another years worth on them.
back log at the IRS for audits good.
Refunds not so much..
we watch ours closely enough and with quarterly filing generally end up +/- 150 bucks at the end of the year.
but others see it as “free money” and want the big refund (and yes, for some it really is free money)
Oh, darn, H&R Block is gonna send their goons after me now!
You must be one who thinks this means anything. Let us know when the Senate votes to approve it and Biden signs it.
Until then it’s just political posturing, like all the crap the Democrats passed when Trump was President.
Losing sucks.
“...Christine Romans had a hissy fit over House Republicans voting to gut the $80 billion IRS funding...”
Why bother? He knows it’s a symbolic move intended to fire up the base but accomplish nothing.
I’d be fine with that, because then nobody would pay, and if nobody paid, then enforcement would be impossible.
CNN, just go away.
The less any of them "accomplish" in the next two years, the better off we will be.
I don't care if the Republicans waste their time on theatrical measures the Democrats will never allow to pass. The messages are good (defund the IRS) and will generate resentment and mistakes in the Democrat ranks. That is entertainment right there.
And the Republicans should use the constant rejection as a rationale for never giving the Democrats anything they want either. The Republicans are probably going to be wiped out permanently in the next set of national "elections". The Democrats have perfected the margin-of-cheat and can win any national "election" of importance to them. The Democrats are not going to let Republicans keep their swag in retirement either. There is no sanctuary.
Remember, Republicans are always considered guilty of anything the Democrats accuse them of doing, but it is not a crime when Democrats do it.
Might as well go down fighting.
