As the fight over who will be the Speaker of the House rages on, there are some interesting sub-battles going on within the Republican Party.
Perhaps the most surprising dynamic is Donald Trump reiterating his full-throated endorsement of Kevin McCarthy on Wednesday, while McCarthy’s detractors remain almost universally Trump-supporting Republicans. It’s hard to get more “MAGA” than Lauren Boebert and Matt Gaetz, with the latter actually doing an “America First” tour during the last election season.

Yet, here we are, with previous alliances fraying, and several members of the anti-McCarthy group weren’t afraid to defy the former president. According to Lauren Boebert, Trump called them to tell them to “knock this off.” She took to the House floor and was having none of it.
Boebert says that Trump called them and told them to "knock this off" and vote for McCarthy.

Good for her. It’s refreshing to see actual free-thinking taking place in Congress, a body that has long been plagued by groupthink and a domineering leadership that essentially tells its members how to vote. As I wrote in an earlier piece, I believe Republican voters are sick of having an elite cabal (which yes, includes Trump) making all the decisions.
And while I get that Trump wants to flex his influence, in doing so, he’s managed to endorse two-thirds of the party’s establishment (Kevin McCarthy and Ronna McDaniel), which makes him part of the establishment. That reality can’t be brushed aside, and I think Boebert has realized she can’t straddle the fence anymore. Trump is her opposition here, and she’s not afraid to deal with that head-on. Seeing that is far preferable to seeing Republicans fall in line because they are told to.
Matt Gaetz also shared criticism of the former president and derided the endorsement of McCarthy.
Supporting McCarthy is the worst Human Resources decision President Trump has ever made.

I’m not sure what Trump is thinking here. He could have been a hero on Wednesday morning by endorsing Byron Donalds and joining some of his biggest supporters in fighting the establishment. Instead, he doubled down on his support for McCarthy. That feels a lot like Trump just wanting to be seen as supporting the “winner,” given McCarthy is likely to prevail eventually once he makes enough concessions.
That’s not leadership, though. Rather, it’s the same kind of inside baseball that so many Republican voters have come to despise. Is Trump really so desperate to regain power that he’s willing to become part of the establishment to get there? It’s hard to come to a different conclusion at this point.
That aside, the now-21 holdouts (McCarthy lost a vote on the sixth ballot) are providing a bit of inspiration in being willing to defy the person who has previously defined their movement. Donalds stepping up as a viable candidate has changed the game.
> Is Lauren Boebert going to give the $1.9m she got from McCarthy, to help win her race? <
If that money came from McCarthy personally, then Boebert should give it back. But I’m guessing that the money came from many GOP donors. McCarthy just passed it out.
And one would hope McCarthy passed that money out to make the GOP stronger, and not to buy loyalty.
McCarthy isn’t married and he lives with Luntz?
McCarthy is married and has two children.
Beard?
McCarthy and Luntz are DC roommates.
So is Luntz a boarder or do they just share the place?
Boebert didn’t receive ‘”$1.9M” from McCarthy, or, his SuperPAC.
She didn’t receive a dime, from him, this past election cycle. No idea if she did, in her previous one.
It would’ve been $10K, at most (from PAC).
‘Not Only Are They Friends, They Are Roommates’: Tucker Carlson Reveals GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy Rented A Room In DC From Pollster Frank Luntz

Oh, I see... wife and kids in CA, he rents a room in DC.. got it..
“Sean is as establishment as it gets.”
Exactly. He’s always been the GOPe’s stooge despite pretending that he is “a conservative” rather than a Republican toady.
Do his fans not understand why he has Lindsey Graham, Karl Rove and the rest of the gang on his show?
Trump who sat on $115 million he raised for the mid-terms demanding Lauren Boebert to back Kevin McCarthy who didn’t give her a dime. That’s rich!
You go Lauren!
The truth is, they have none. They are simply begging for attention. They have no mission. They are "The Squad" of the right. This is an embarrassment.
Actually they have a very specific set of rule changes intended to end Pelosi era abuses of power. McCarthy could agree to the changes and have their vote. Instead he is providing the same empty promises that everyone knows he has no intention of keeping.
It's worth recognizing that the current republican leaders are the biggest failures in at least fifty years in terms of electoral success. Wanting them in power is political suicide.
What is their strategy? They have none. McCarthy has 200 votes. No one else come close to that. No one else can win. If this was a fight against the Dems, I'd support it. But this is a tantrum by people like Gaetz who are only obsessed by their own reflection and any television camera.
The great thing about this fight?
We can find out who we can trust.
Honestly, if the 20 said no speaker at all and shut everything down until our border is immediately secured that’d be reasonable.
The 20 should all vote for Trump as speaker just to watch the media freak out.
We need the Overton Window effect here. The Malcom X “burn this motha down” to move the entire debate to our position. Redefine what’s reasonable.
This is really the genius of our founders, God guided, at work here. It’s unAmerican to question how the institution works.
Glad RINOs are being exposed like Hannity. McCarthy should go down as the only politicians so incompetent he lost the speaker race and had to bow out. He needs to go into the dustbin of history along with McTurtle and the other Uniparty stooges.
Agreed.
Sorry, you “hard-line principled people”, this does nothing at best.
Not from what I’ve seen.
Up until recently, took on the nature of a cult of personality. Nothing Trump did - at all - could ever be wrong.
Most of these people voted for him only because they didn't want Biden to win.
There aren't 75 million Americans who worship Trump.
Worship? You Desantis fluffers have nerve to use THAT word? LOL!!!! That is rich. Get a room.
The process is working as it was intended to, and yes it's the genius of our founding fathers at work here.
Very few actually get that point. Lord knows the lying liberal lamestream media doesn't get it and they're propagandizing disinformation deliberately every day about how our process works. Liars all.
