“The term “Palestine” derives from the word Philistia, the name given by Greek writers to the land of the Philistines”

The Philistines were Greek invaders who settled in the area around 1200 BC.

The modern Arabs have nothing in common with the previous Palestine.

The Peleset were one of several groups referred to as the Sea Peoples who attacked Egypt several times in the years around 1200 B.C. It is generally agreed that they are the same as the Philistines of the Bible (as in Delilah and Goliath).

The Peleset seem to have come from the Aegean area. In the Table of Nations in Genesis 10, verse 14 speaks of "Casluhites (from whom the Philistines came) and Caphtorites." Caphtor seems to mean Crete.

2 Samuel 8.18 mentions Kerethites and Pelethites (evidently foreign mercenaries of King David).

Herodotus mentions Syrie Palaistine which included at least part of what the Romans later called Palaestina. The name indicates that the Philistines had not been forgotten (they had long since lost their original language) so the name may predate Herodotus' time (5th century B.C.).
