Trust the science …
Fact is, fallout isn’t the issue that a lot of people think it is. That’s especially true with an airburst. All those people we saw with skin falling off them after the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs where people who were exposed directly to the fireball but far enough away that they didn’t get vaporized.
One concern I have is that once a small tactical nuke is used and people see what kind of damage is done and what kind of damage isn’t done, their use may become common. That’s the type of thing that can escalate into bigger and bigger bombs until fallout does become a serious issue. And that’s ignoring the fact that simply using such a big bombs, even without fallout, is a serious issue.
As a “physicist”, methinks that somehow the standards for him were “coincidentally” a bit less than those required for real physicists. He’s said a few other science howlers before.
Tyson is a grifter, not a scientist. He’s right up their with Bill Nye.

A lot also depends on the design of the bomb. The old neutron bombs were comparatively “clean” and designed to be air bursts. One huge pulse of radiation and it’s largely gone.
Long half life contaminants can be built into the device to increase fallout and render large areas uninhabitable for decades if desired. Or it can be ground burst in which case a lot more fallout is created.
But this talk about using any nuclear device in war is utter madness. It won’t stop at tactical use and everyone knows this. If Putin were to order the use of nuclear weapons his own Generals would splatter his brains all over that stupid table he sits at.

The left is laying the groundwork to permit Russia to nuke the Ukraine. Next they will be assuring us that it won’t escalate into a full nuclear exchange. You know, like when they were telling us that the Covid vaccine was effective and absolutely safe.

I just watched the exchange, I think I see where he was trying to go and I completely agree with him. He was just saying that using the modern nukes is not the catastrophic radiation death to the world that a lot of people think it is. And he’s right about that.
But Bill Nye wears a white lab coat or a bow tie!?!...
I don’t think it’s idiocy. At least not the point he was trying to make. But, of course, opinions vary. The case can be made that it’s important that people have an unreasonable fear of nuclear weapons beyond what they can actually do so that it keeps us from ever using them.
The concern is that once someone actually does use these smaller weapons, and nothing happens except it obliterates the base they fall on or something like that, people are going to say, why haven’t we been using these for decades?
Remember, MacArthur was fired because he wanted to use nukes against North Korea’s armies that would have completely obliterated their armies and won the war.
A 1 Megaton optimized for blast nuclear detonation does virtually no blast damage 20 miles away.
Fallout is mainly a ground burst result.
I don’t generally respect or agree with global warming retards like Tyson on anything, but in this case he is (probably accidentally) correct.
Never trust anyone that wears a bow tie.

The way I agree with everything you say, I believe that anyone, even putin, who decides to use a nuke in war today we’ll go for the cleanest while they can. If someone got caught intentionally using a dirty bomb it would be considered a terrible act of terrorism, not an act of war.

One would hope…. However if there is one constant lesson of history, it is this… never underestimate the stupidity of man.
Technically, he’s correct.
If someone sets off a ‘nuke’ anywhere near you, ‘fallout’ will be the least of your worries....................🤷♂️🤦♂️🤷♀️🤦♀️😉..........................
