A guy from our church went to the VA for a checkup yesterday and ended up getting a flu shot. He said he never has felt such pain in his arm. He doesn’t plan on another one.

Prescinding from the fact that the shots weren't granted EUA to prevent serious illness, by what method could anyone detect that a shot prevented such a thing?

Possibly, but that's partly a matter of actuarial math.
About 3.3MM people die annually in the US. Thus, in a decade about 10% of our population today will be dead.
I believe you're accepting as truth the claim that the shots will kill vast numbers of people, and thus will account for the remaining 40%. Sadly, that claim is as speculative as almost everything spewing from Fauci's mouth.
To be fair, none of these shots underwent legitimate trials that examined long-term impacts that other approved vaccines underwent. Further, vaccines fail trials 59% of the time and take a median of 9 years. Thus, we have little hard data on which to assess the long run potential for people to die from these shots. Further, "die unexpectedly" seems to be uttered with great frequency nowadays. Thus, I empathize with the long-run concerns for these shots.
But we are rational beings and not snowflake leftists.
