"Cars pulled up in front of us, to the side of us, and behind us and I said those are either bad guys or the FBI. Well, it turns out they were the FBI."

Snatching people's phones is a stroke of (evil) genius. People are piling their lives into them like they did on desktop & laptop computers in years past. More than just a phone, a highly mobile computer, with apps that can access and/or manage every aspect of a user's life. And a lot of them will have the passwords autosaved, which would give incredible access before the user (victim) could scramble to change and secure their accounts or services. This is a big lawless fishing operation in motion, to get anything they can on their targets.
