Agree.
One of my faves is my Marlin 336R in 30-30. Built in 1964, rebuilt in 2022, refinished as well. New optics. Good gun for the GA woods/brush. As a lever action gun, it’s off the RADAR.
Bolt gun for the open, longer range pastures is the .308
“I know of the terrorist Yon is talking about.
He shot my friend’s cousin, in Mosul.”
Sorry to hear about that. Hope your friend’s cousin came out okay.
At least the terrorist is enjoying his 72 virgin blue-haired, nose-ringed Incels - probably not what he was expecting.
Agree. Never even lased a potential 200 yd shot.
Longest shot available to me is 100 - 150 yards.
Dis be da Shiznitz,
Fo Rizzle!

Ma Triggers.
actually lately 300 blackout is a LOT easier to find than 30-30....I own both. Also 30-06 is very pricey still.
Using the same logic, nobody should own a Corvette or a NASCAR.
“Great post, and Yon is outstanding, but 5.56mm is a great caliber.”
Yup. If someone thinks I’m a child for having (or should I say “had” - ATF did you get that?) a 5.56-based weapon, I’m okay with that. Would not want to be on the receiving end of any caliber.
Opinions about the best gun/caliber are about as ubiquitous as oh, say, ... opinions.
Amen: K.I.S.S., and keep it suited to your AO, and not a fantasy safari in Alaska or Africa.
If you live in MT, obviously your needs will be totally different than somebody in GA.
“Of course then we didn’t have Hollywood producing any movies that promoted and glorified that kind of violence.”
Or, Call of Duty.
He’s right
I own a Ruger .........
No, they should get AR-10s instead, which use 7.62X51 NATO and .308 Winchester!
If “quiet work” is on your itinerary, then clearly, 300 Blackout is the obvious choice for an AR upper.
Along with your 556 uppers.
Well, the author is entitled to his opinion, but as for 5.56 or .223, I sure as hell wouldn’t want to be shot with one!
Let’s not forget the damage caused by crazies in schools or on crowds of innocent people.
Having said that, I really can’t find fault with anything else the author is saying.
As a AR 15 armorer to pass the course one had to take it completely apart except taking the front site and barrel off.
Every pin every part and put it back together in 30 minutes.
Most were done in less then 15
.
Not that many parts. god luck in your build
“But this never would have happened with 7.62x51.”
Not true. Lots of guys have shot bad guy with all kinds of weapons, even the 50 BMG, and have had the bad guy still fighting.
If you don’t hit vital areas, the bad guy is just in pain and will still fight; 22 or 50 BMG.
He was a Sgt and standing in the hatch of a Stryker and was shot through the side of neck. Passed between the trachea and esophagus, causing minimal damage. The whole thing was quite a story.
“If “quiet work” is on your itinerary, then clearly, 300 Blackout is the obvious choice for an AR upper.”
I’ve shot the 300 Blackout with really good cans on them. They were still ~106db. About the sound of a 22 rifle shooting subsonics.
Those of us whom Shaka Zulu would hold back in reserve are actually thankful for 5.56 caliber and other common rounds... even a Marlin .22wmr "coyote" rifle with a good scope has pragmatic value for social work involving coyotes.
You said: “In much of the south, it’s rare to get a 200 yard shot.” ( I agree)
My father killed his last white tail deer, at over 400 yards. (Dad died in March of 2021) He almost always shot 30-06. (he was a armorer in WWII)
For me, it is not about long range. 5.56 can be accurate, it does not normally have as much knockdown power.
I like and shoot 30-30, with the right load, it is capable of accuracy out to 200 yards. (160 gr. Hornady FTX bullets) Receiver sight is recommended.
Also reload and shoot 7.62x39. Very similar ballistics to 30-30.
7.62x51 is the logical next step, then 30-06.
I don’t own a 6 or 6.5 Creedmoor (very popular now).
Good article!
