I remember seeing photos of Justice Douglas in his last years on the bench and he was definitely “not there.”. Reports back that up. He was 81 when he died. When I was growing up outside St. Louis, our congressman was Melvin Price , who was in office over forty years. That was a safe Democrat seat — he always ran unopposed — and about the last five years he never came home from Washington. He was 83 when he died in office.
