I think that much of what we see (i.e. Social Security) is a literal Ponzi scheme. Some of the rest may not literally fit the description of a Ponzi scheme, but it still has the feel of it. It’s just a matter of time. We are in a speeding car, heading for a brick wall, and we (the government) is taking small steps trying to buy a few more moments of time. But we will slam into the brick wall. That’s not even a question. The only question will be exactly when the crash will occur.
But we’ve passed the point of no return. The crash cannot be avoided.

(I don't want to be part of a union of 50 states. We tried that. It doesn't work.)

For all intents and purposes, the crash has already occurred, and the U.S. government is living on a credit card, and the citizens are having to pay a little at a time in order to cover the credit card payments, but, all that's being paid is the interest, while the principal amount keeps getting larger and larger.
There is no way to ever pay back the debt, and the government keeps adding to the debt with larger and larger yearly deficits.
The only way to stop the madness is for a freezing of government spending, but, we all know that government lives to spend, so, we're all screwed.
