”It [ a cashier’s check] holds no guarantee that those funds are available.”

Fifty years ago I purchased a cashiers check with most of my funds before starting a long motorcycle trip. Five hundred miles from home I suffered a mechanical breakdown and needed the money much sooner than expected.

I stopped at a bank with which I had no account and presented the check. The clerk disappeared for a few minutes and then reappeared with the money.

I think they just had to verify that the issuer was a real bank and they called them to verify that the check was the one issued. That was all they needed and I walked out with the money and no hassle.

My expectation is that, like a postal money order, the use of a cashier’s check eliminates the purchaser of the check from having any additional role in the transaction.

I recently purchased an early model Universal M1 Carbine from a seller in Ohio. I used a Cashier’s check to pay for the transaction and the rifle was sent to my FFL. There were no complications.

You’re not grasping the reality:

A Cashier’s Check is a personal check drawn by a bank and is not legal tender.

It’s no different than a personal check written without funds or printed fraudulently; the cashier’s check can printed as a facsimile of a bank draft without value.

A cashier’s check is a safe way of transporting / sending funds, but NEVER accept a cashier’s check in exchange for goods or services as payment until the bank validates the funds.

There are innumerous accounts of such fraud being perpetrated on unwitting victims where the cashier’s check was deposited, the victim’s account credited, then 2-3 days later the bank debits the account and the victim is liable for the lost funds.

It’s a defect in the system in a technology era.

All cashier’s checks should be assigned a token key and printed with a QR code which can assist in validating the bank draft immediately.

PayPal or the like is much safer for funds transactions (but, to be clear, I will never use PayPal).

His secretary did the check wrong, but that has apparently been corrected.

Uh......since when do secretaries create 'certified' bank checks?

I wouldn't be shipping ANYTHING until I get a FFL name, address to give to my FFL AND gotten the check and cashed/cleared it, period.

Ask your bank - if they say the check has cleared, then ship.
