I find it surprising because the Googleplex is supposed to be this great wonderland of a place to work with free food and other perks and yet employees are up in arms at the thought of going back to the office.
I worked in the Googleplex from around 2004 to 2007 and then near by it in other Mountain View buildings Google had taken over till about 2008. The pay was never that high but yeah they used to have wonderful perks. Free breakfast, lunch, and dinner and snacks and first rate food. Could get smoothies from smoothie bar anytime we wanted. Had massage chairs, and they had real table massages available that were subsidized where Google paid 50 of the 75 bucks we paid only 25 bucks plus the tip. There was a sand volleyball court in the courtyard and I learned to play (actually played once with Sergy Brin on other team who gave me some tips on playing).
Over my time there the place go more political in both the going woke way, and also just the internal politics way of people fighting for control of projects. But for the most part it was a very nice place to work and very tech/engineer focused. Kind of a country club...but with more people coming in and the company growing it just went down hill. They started cutting back on some of the food amenities in my last year there. And it was getting just a bit too woke politically (although I don't think we used the word "woke" then). Kind of sad to see an engineering wonderland go downhill like that...
all of these little wokesters get to experience 7.00$ +/gallon gas going back to gHive. Sucks to be them
