At this point it is clear that Putin has no way to take the major cities.
The only military question left in this war is if Putin can hold the parts of Ukraine he has taken. Will the mass mobilization of the Ukrainian people retake those areas before any peace talks?

Nope. There are examples of cites that gave up and it is business as usual living their normal lives, and the cities where the Nazis took positions at schools and hospitals and firing artillery.
The population is getting smarter over time, chasing the Nazis out and reporting their positions to the Russian troops.

The Russians are forgetting the painful lessons they learned in 1945. Armored vehicles were not designed and are not suitable for fighting in tight urban spaces.
The Russian advance on Kiev is not their top priority. It is the media’s top priority, but the Kiev Russian forces in general are waiting until the Ukraine army, in the Donbas where 75+% of it is, is wiped out.
There is no point in advancing until the Donbas forces arrive. Should not be too very long, but they clearly are committed to victory and are in no hurry.
Worth noting: Active Russian Ground Forces number around 290,000; number of troops committed by most reports: 150,000-200,000. Not even the upper echelon generals know the exact number of troops in the RU GF. Naval infantry (Marines) is around 12,000. See Wiki.

Most images I’ve seen show vehicles lost in rural areas with only one or two inside a city.

If by normal lives, you mean going out every night and killing some Russians then you are correct. A lot of dead Russians in Kherson the last couple of nights.
