I caught that right away. That phrase belongs no where in a news story.

Robotics will become the future of brick and mortar retail stores. There will be a few displays under bullet proof plexiglass. Everything else will be on line for browsing. After you pay for your merchandise, robots/automation will deliver your purchase to a bin of lockers, and then open your door after the rear door is closed and secured. Kind of like an Amazon Hub, but with doors on both sides.
Sales clerks will have no control over the robotics, so without a valid form of paying being recorded in order to finish the purchase, the robots/automation will not ferry your purchase into the lockers for access. You could hold a knife to the throat of the clerk, and all you would get is a dead clerk. They will have no control over product delivery until a credit card is cleared, a vaild alternative like Apple Pay is verified, or the correct sum of cash is verified through a cash reader. Of course, cash is going away shortly, so this simplifies things.
Return policies and exchanges will be liberal due to shoppers not being able to try anything out or try anything on prior to purchasing.
Basically, you will have to pay for your merchandise before it is delivered and theft will become impossible. There will be no possibility of contact between goods and a would-be thief. None. Not unless they blast through the armored wall or lockers with explosives. It will become a diminishing return to steal.

Turn off the cameras and body slam one or two to the asphalt or joint lock a right arm or two. Change their signature for life.
Wonder where this happened.
There was some incident at the grocery store where I was shopping early this evening.
I heard some commotion off to the left front of the store, then a woman shouted “Get the gun!” and a couple of tall, well-built (not fat) twenty- or thirty-something men sprinted to the front. A few other people went to look, then I heard “She’s gone” and that was that, the person had escaped.
Those guys were plainclothes cops or something.
There is an open hot food buffet in that area of the store, near the entrance (people have run out of the store with food trays before), next to it are a couple of aisles of wine and liquor, but a store clerk with a key needs to access the more expensive items which have been shut up behind glass. Most liquor has a security cap on it which is removable only by the cashiers.
I was surprised to hear “Get the gun!” and also surprised that people apparently wanted to pursue the miscreant, I thought that there were rules about avoiding conflict which could result in injury or a lawsuit. I wonder what else was going on.
And I was also surprised at the visibility of those plainclothesmen, who stood out to me in passing even before I heard the shouting.
All electronics are under lock and key...
