It was one bullet that discharged from the prop gun on the Santa Fe movie “Rust” and killed the director of photography and wounded the movie’s director.
An eyewitness on set tells this column that the bullet went straight through the body of DP Halyna Hutchins and into the clavicle of the film’s director Joel Souza.
Very quickly the set was locked down. Ambulance and helicopters arrived. Hutchins and Souza were sent straight to the hospital. Hutchins died en route in a helicopter.
On the ground, Baldwin was in shock but composed. He kept asking why he was handed a “hot gun.” Our eyewitness said Baldwin kept saying “In all my years, I’ve never been handed a hot gun.”
“A hot gun” means a gun with real ammunition.
Baldwin, not knowing the fate of the victims, was taken immediately to the hospital. “He had no idea how badly they were hurt or Halyna was dead.”

Yep. The prop master is definitely going to get fried, but Baldwin owns a major part of this chitshow too.
Maybe if you dropped the "holier than thou" attitude and had a grown-up conversation, maybe you could point out exactly what I said wrong, given my 30+ years in media.
I have a friend that is a Class II manufacturer of prop guns. They should have a non-removable baffle in the barrel that prevents any projectile passing thru the muzzle, only muzzle flash from the blanks. Something isn’t right with this story.

For closeups they use real weapons. The blanks present the “real life” smoke and recoil. On a movie as cheap as this, they couldn’t afford CGI.
I know the movie was a western, but the photos of Baldwin were not period pieces, so it could be a modern style movie. The type of firearm used was not listed.
If it was modern, you could eject a magazine full of blanks, examine them and not even notice there was a live round in the chamber.
In a revolver, if you don’t eject and reload the cartridges you would never know. I am pretty sure only an “expert” would notice the weight difference. And I think we could all agree that Baldwin is no expert.
You would need artillery, at close range, for the gas from a blank to go through one person and hurt another person.
You’re so right about that. FMJ. The second victim was “critically injured”, so it wasn’t just flying bits of “something”.
Or just load the weapon in front of everyone to show that the proper load is being used.
Bullcrap. He pretty much violated all four of the basic rules of gun safety.
I hope the prop guy wore gloves before putting his thumb print on that live cartridge.
Perhaps you never saw a movie where it seemed the shooter was aiming directly into the camera because it was placed where the victim was in the scene. I’ve seen that many times. Countless times.
The one who held the gun and fired is responsible. Elementary gun safety. When someone hands you a gun, it’s your responsibility to check its status. You do not accept the declaration of someone else who said “it’s not loaded.”
I think a lot of people have the wrong idea of what “prop gun” means. In this context it simply means that it was a gun used in a make believe scenario. It doesn’t mean it was a non functional firearm.
There ARE those guns. They are plastic or rubber. They are not used for close up firing sequences. Nor do they use “cap guns.”
Assuming a full metal jacket and not a hollow point, of course.
I thought “West” was a movie about the Old West, in which case the handguns would be single-shot revolvers. But then, I don’t know what era it’s supposed to be about.

EVERY gun is a “loaded” gun.
I was taught that before I was allowed to even touch one.

Ok. So, in a movie shot the cinematographer sits behind the camera, checking for things like focus, zoom, panning and what not. The director is usually directly behind them, watching on a live screen. This way they can make sure the shot is going the way they want.
An actor doing a close up of the gun fight will stand in front of the camera and act directly towards the lens. If the actor is shooting directly into the camera a real bullet could easily go through the cinematographer (probably less than 10 feet away. And lodge into the directors chest.
The next time you watch a movie with gun play, the technique will be obvious.

It was a cheap movie. My guess if they hired some local guy as their prop master. You get what you pay for.
