What were your favorite Arcade games or Pinball from the 70s and early 80s ?

I played a lot of Off Road, Defender, Battlezone, Astro Blaster, Galaga in the Golden age.

I know a few people who collect and refurb pinball machines, but I was never coordinated enough to play those so I have no favorite, but I appreciate the art and mechanism as I may a fine watch or automobile.

During the 1979-1980 period, I was a Galaxian fanatic. There was a tabletop version of this game in the bar of the restaurant I worked in and we could play it on breaks during the breakfast shift when the bar was closed. Many of my hard earned quarters went into that game.

This was a much slower version of the Galaga game that would succeed it in 1981. Once video games got faster and more complex, I stopped liking them. Would much rather play pinball.

I liked Pac-Man as well. Another video game that was slow and simple to learn.

I liked Tron. The machine was in a bar and for the life of me I can’t remember whether it was local or while I was away at college.

Dragon’s Lair (50 cents to essentially watch yourself die...)

Space Wars. This was a predecessor to Asteroids (the ships were controlled the same), only it was a 2-player, PvP game.

Later, my favorites were Missile Command, Defender, and Joust.

Which Tron? The one where you were flinging discs at an opponent, or the one with the four different sub-games?

I liked them both.

Too many to name in the video game category, except I never cared for the ‘memorize and execute pattern’ games like Pac-Man and Qbert (or the laserdisc games for same reason, but Dragon’s Lair was at least fun to watch.)

Most are better in emulation, especially the console compilation of play-alikes. The exceptions are the ones with specialized controllers (e.g. Star Wars, Marble Madness)

On the pinball front, Addams Family tops my list.

Rusty: Hey, ya' got Pac Man?
Cousin Dale: No.
Rusty: Ya' got Space Invaders?
Cousin Dale: Nope.
Rusty: Ya' got Asteroids?
Cousin Dale: Naw, but my dad does. Can't even sit on the toilet some days.

Asteroids. I could be retired if I had the money I put into that game.

In the early 80’s I made high score on a Galaga game at an arcade in Ocean City MD. When I went back in 2007 it was still there. I was more surprised that the game worked.
