Except that Wrong Way Corrigan's crime was to file a fictitious flight plan because he was trying to fly to Ireland and was denied permission. He was a skilled pilot and aircraft mechanic.

“ Wrong Way” Corrigan” may or may not have gone the wrong way. At that time you had to get approval to fly across the Atlantic and it wasn’t easy to get it. So Corrigan just happened to have a bunch of extra fuel tanks with the range to fly across the Atlantic and was looking at the wrong end of the compass needle. Seems legit.
