Reading up on it more, I don’t think cherries are a significant source of melatonin. Montmorency cherries have about 13.5 nanograms (billionths of a gram) in one gram of fruit flesh, so you would need to eat about 60 kg of fresh pitted cherries to get one milligram of melatonin.
By comparison, IIRC, pistachio nuts (dried, no shell) have about 6.6 mg melatonin per oz or about 1/4 mg melatonin per gram. Thus you would need to eat about 4 grams of pistachio to get one milligram of melatonin.
IF tart cherries help people get to sleep, it can’t just be the melatonin. By the way, Rainier cherries have about six times as much melatonin as Montmorency cherries — still not a significant source. You would only need to eat 10 kg of Rainier cherries to get 1 mg of melatonin.
(The last sentence ended up in the wrong paragraph when first posted.)

I did your calculation and only came up with 66.363636. :-)
However by that time I had already shelled 75 pistachios, chopped them up and added them to a half of a mashed avocado with a spritz of lemon juice and a dash of cayenne pepper. (An experiment I won’t try again unless I find unsalted pistachios. Other than being too salty, it had a good flavor, though.)
But be that as it may, I now have had similar things to compare - 2 days back to back, each with 75 pistachios, followed shortly by 500m Niacin powder. Yesterday I added 200m melatonin powder after the pistachios, and only had a slight ear and face tingle for 20 minutes. Today I decided to forego the melatonin powder completely, to see what would happen. Well, I had a massive flush, and was red all over from head to toe for an hour!
Sometime last week, I did similar numbers as yesterday, minus any pistachios, and just got a small tingle of short duration, as well.
My conclusion - the pistachios don’t work as well as the powder, for me. Is the powder more bioavailable to me? What other conclusion can I make, however illogical it sounds? But that’s where I am. Go figure!
My experiment today was intended to be 50P/30min/500N. It was a dirty experiment. After I bought the pistachios this morning, I probably had 25 or more on the way home — because I like pistachios. Around 2 pm I ate 50 more, chewing very well because I figured that would help with “processing”. I set my watch alarm for half an hour, but I got distracted when the alarm went off, so it was probably another hour before I actually took the niacin. I had a few more pistachios just to make sure.
I had a nice nap this evening, but I feel like my melatonin overload is dissipating.
The result was probably the mildest and most diffuse flush feeling I have experienced. Instead of the usual warm tingle around my ears, I had the feeling of a warm halo around my head which gradually descended down through my shoulders and out into my forearms. No tingle or discomfort.
And you just used the pistachios as your only melatonin source? Lucky you! I envy you! I don’t mind the flushes per se, but it’s just that the synergy isn’t there and less is being accomplished, especially with a heavy flush. So I feel it was a failure in that respect.
If the pistachios are so full of melatonin, why don’t they make me sleepy like the powders do, I wonder?
I know what you mean about chewing them thoroughly. When I ate them plain yesterday, it took me over a half hour just to eat them, for that reason. Same thing when I ate them mixed with the avocado, actually. I usually eat meals much faster than that!
Yes, though I wonder how much melatonin was still in my body from all those previous experiments. I'm guessing that my effective dose given the delays was 50P-60P.
I'm going to try stepping up the niacin from 500 to 1000 mg while increasing the pistachios proportionally. If I get up to 1000, I will then try stepping back the pistachios to find a minimum effective P dose.
If the pistachios are so full of melatonin, why don’t they make me sleepy like the powders do, I wonder?
The pistachios actually have far less melatonin, so there must be some magic ingredient in the pistachios that makes the melatonin useful rather than just sleep-inducing. Perhaps some of us make that magic ingredient naturally, while others have to consume pistachios to get it.
If pistachios generally made people sleepy, they'd have to have a warning label.
That’s a darn good price on pistachios.
And yes, I could have done the math like that, but most wouldn’t know where the numbers came from.
The next best thing for natural mellie is almonds and it’s a lot less (can’t remember the number) than pistachios. You’d have to eat lots of almonds compared to pistachios. On the other hand tart cherry juice is delicious and can’t hurt for mellie buildup.
I didn’t glean what your flush was like from the pistachios. And I can’t tell if you are mixing powder and pistachios. Don’t do that.
Pro tip: much on them throughout the day.
Yes. The flush (intentional) was different for me too. It felt deeper and not so close to the skin as before. I felt it in my joints and bones it seemed. It wasn’t uncomfortable, but it was there. Further, the flush was long delayed as compared to powdered mellie.
To be clear, I only used pistachios yesterday. I can't say exactly how many, but it could have been 100 or more total, spread through the day. I did P50 at 2 pm, intending to take 500N at 2:30, but I didn't take the niacin (and a few more pistachios) until around 3:30.
This is what I reported afterward, ICYMI:
"The result was probably the mildest and most diffuse flush feeling I have experienced. Instead of the usual warm tingle around my ears, I had the feeling of a warm halo around my head which gradually descended down through my shoulders and out into my forearms. No tingle or discomfort."
My brother commented: "100 pistachios and you see God? Cheap date ..."

As to “munching throughout the day” (of anything, for that matter), it’s a habit I’ve never acquired, and my lifestyle really doesn’t allow for... sounds like my husband, always snacking on something, whatever he’s doing. Ugh, I can’t even imagine... I eat 2 meals, and one snack in between. The rest of the time, I like my teeth clean. LOL
Right now I feel all pistachio’d out, frankly. Shame that it happened. Too much of a good thing in too short a time frame, I guess. It happens. I’ll have to come back slowly, or I’ll end up hating them. Tonight I’ll try with the powders alone.
Sorry for replying to the message that was meant for you. It must be due to my melatonin fog.
Borrowing from the immortal words of Rita Hayworth, “Put the blame on Mellie, boys, put the blame on Mellie.”
By the way, the fog seems to have cleared this morning.
No worries, I understand!
I’ve had a craving for apples, as I hadn’t eaten any for a couple weeks (they’ve been part of my afternoon snack, and too close to supper and subsqeuent niatonin dosing). I’m a creature of habit, yes! lol So I decided to have 2 apples sliced and dipped in peanut butter for breakfast, instead. Yes, I’m just now eating breakfast at 1:15. (That’s perfectly normal for eccentric moi.) I guess I’ll have the rest of my fruit/nut combo late this afternoon instead.
I’ve been slightly “bugged” by the alterations to my previous normal eating and supplementation routines. In particular, not taking quercetin. It’s not like I began taking it when everybody did last year, but I’d been taking it for 20 years. They really helped with my allergies of unknown origin here in south FL. And now my nose has been running a lot more. Maybe it’s my body ridding itself of the mysterious “gunk”? I don’t know any more...
“100 pistachios and you see God? Cheap date ...”
That’s going on the Telegram board.
Can you find a three hour period in between doses to eat an apple? Make time for the Honey Crisp.
There is a price for ridding the inflammation. Many prices it seems. I'm finally over "the purge" from the gut. Ugh.
Sure, if I break my established routines and quit going OCD about them. ;-)
What’s the Honey Crisp? Sorry, no comprendo eso.
It gets better. Today I got up, had some pistachios, had some breakfast, had some more pistachios, washed the bedroom and bathroom floors, and just had time for 600N before heading off to an acupuncture appointment. I had a very mild flush on the way, but it had completely calmed down by the time I got to the clinic.
The lovely Miss Kate diagnosed my heel/sole problem as plantar fasciitis, and proceeded to stick needles on the palm side of one hand (for the fasciitis in my foot) and on the back of the other hand and in both feet. As usual I slept for almost exactly an hour, but when I woke up I experienced something completely different.
Usually when I awake from my acu-nap, I feel pretty good. After all, it’s a nap. But this time I awoke in the midst of pure transcendental bliss, like I had never experienced before. My entire body was immersed in pure pleasure, from head to toe — and no, apart from the needles, Miss Kate was not involved. It went on for 15 or 20 minutes.
I don’t know if this had anything to do with the niacin, but you can be assured there WILL be more experiments.
OMG you don’t know what a Honey Crisp apple is? It is the crispiest and sweetest apple there is. They are special (and expensive) apples. They are stored in a zero oxygen environment. That way they can be doled out over the year. Kinda looks like a Fuji, but not mealy like that.
Glory be!
