President Biden’s withdrawal from Afghanistan has left the country in shambles and the Taliban wasted no time in striking, now controlling large swaths of the country as the remaining Afghan forces give little resistance.

The Taliban have begun releasing propaganda videos documenting their triumphs.

...

Over 2,442 US troops dead and 20,666 wounded in the war since 2001, over $2.26 trillion spent, 20 years of fighting and what do we have to show for it?

Our hostile elites got rich off the war contracts and bought themselves lavish palaces but the American people just got stuck with the bill and had their kids sent home in body bags.

From OpIndia, “Afghanistan: Taliban captures 5 major cities in just 3 days, gets control of opium smuggling routes”:

It has been 20 years, if the government had a shred of legitimacy this wouldn’t be happening. South Vietnam would still exist if it got the same amount of aid Afghanistan has gotten.

If you’d gone to the Soviets in the spring of 1989...when they left Afghanistan, they would have told you that it’s false belief that the region can ever be stabilized.

You could have thrown the Romans into this....the Nazis...the Japanese of 1939...it doesn’t matter.

Good. They can have that hell-hole. If the Afghan government doesn’t want to fight the Taliban, then why should we?

We’ve trained and equipped the Afghans for TWENTY YEARS. If they haven’t found the will to fight the Taliban by now, they never will.

This is one Biden move that I approve of, even though Biden delayed the withdrawal from Trump’s original timeline.

How would a Trump withdrawal been any better? Or any worse?

Trump would have watched over them and sent in help but the dems just want to create “refugees” to spread around the world.

About the only Biden policy that a rational, decent person can support. Congressman Ron Paul was prescient and ignored. He outlined chapter and verse what would come to pass in America, Iraq and Afghanistan due to our misguided interventions. He understood that you could not change the values and practices of a medieval culture by force of arms. America not only suffered close to three thousand dead and twenty thousand physically wounded but also tens of thosands more psychologically maimed. The trillions squandered in “nation building” of course weakened the American economy and made the political ascension of the odd , exhibitionist Obama possible.

Ron Paul was right. He was ignored. Yet it is doubtful that the mediocre people elected and chosen to high office have learned the lessons of Vietnam, Iraq and Afghabnistan. There will be more quagmires to come.

Complete nonsense. Trump wanted us out, completely out. We would have been gone back in the spring and Trump would not have sent troops back in. The only difference is that by now the Taliban would have been a few months further along in their takeover.

Inevitable. The cost of not having the Tollybon taking over is borne by young American soldiers, mostly by their lives. They had 20 years to get their shit together and obviously they didn’t. We have grieving families and disabled veterans who will be paying their price for way longer than 20 years. Besides, it isn’t about the Tollybon in the first place it is the opium poppies.

Part of the reason Afghanistan has stayed in the stone age is that it has been a battleground for larger players for years/centuries.

In the 1950s-1970s it was open to tourism and travel. Then the Soviets, the Pakistanis, the CIA, the Indians and even the Saudis all wanted a piece of the place.

If the Taliban are smart, they will keep ALL foreign powers at arms length, and simply focus on development and business.

To be fair we went there to destroy Al Qaeda and Kill UBL which we did, the Taliban and the whole nation building was a secondary objective, which was never fully going to happen the way we wanted and we should not have bothered with it. One way or another we were leaving someday and A Stan was always going to be a $hithole, if you though otherwise I got a bridge to sell ya.
