“steering armies ain’t trivial.”

Lol. Right. Especially in a muddy dense forest. Hans Guderian cracked that nut in the Ardennes though 1900 years later.

lol. They say Octavian/Augustus was never the same after that. He kind of had a mental breakdown. His family life didn’t help much either. Octavian is a bit of an enigma. Had a reputation as a coward and sickly young man, but spent 20 years successfully fending off Marc Antony and the remnants of the Republic. And then solidifying the empire while maintaining the facade of still being a republic. I have not been able to judge him myself. But there is no doubt he was a capable and strong leader and administrator.

Spartacus was hunted down by Marcus Licinius Crassus. "Crassus" and "Varus" sound a bit alike. Could you be confusing the two?

No, they had Crassus (and Pompeo) finishing off Spartacus. Varus was after him before. Varus is also depicted as taking Spartacus as a slave when he bucked the Roman alliance with his own people, the Thracians.

Looks like they took the name of a defeated Roman General and inserted him into the Spartacus story so he could get beat again. He was a right bastard, too.

It follows what is known of the story pretty well.

It also sets up a second season to finish the story but I doubt that is happening.

Whatever, it was html txt. It was a warning to stop pestering me. He followed me here and thinks I’m a script kiddie. Apparently he has spent a lot of time in FR jail. Absolutely nothing malicious occurred. If the owner of this site wants to boot me, it’s his property, and I respect property rights. But I don’t put up with harassment either.

I’m reading “The Steel Wave: A Novel of World War II,” by Jeff Shaara.

In the first pages, a three man commando team is brought by a mini submarine to Omaha Beach seven or eight months before the D-Day invasion. Their specific task was to collect samples of rock, soil and sand so engineers in England could determine if the area could support heavy military vehicles to be brought ashore. Rommel thought they were reconnoitering and taking stock of shore defenses.

I’m doing a lot of family genealogical research. German ancestors were using Latin names into the 1700s, probably influenced by the Roman Catholic church.

I found his portrayal in the HBO series Rome to be both unexpected & interesting. Comments?

I watched “The Serpent” last month at my daughter’s recommendation. It was a fascinating show, part murder mystery (but you know who did it), part detective story (with no detectives), part Manson Cult, part Inspector Javert / Ahab persistence to capture an adversary, part global politics with incompetent and feckless diplomats only interested in not rocking the boat.

I think it would have made it there anyway. Brittania (my ancestors) just didn’t have the technology to fend off the superpower of the day. They would have come back like Agricola and even given the Scotts (Caledonians) a run for their money. So Christianity would have reached my ancestors at some point in my humble opinion.
