CNN currently is running an explanatory piece titled, “How to fly safely a year into the pandemic.” Unfortunately, whoever was responsible for the article does not understand vaccines — or basic math.
One paragraph of the article reads:
In addition, real world studies of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines show they are only 90% protective against the coronavirus, not 95% as reported in clinical trials. Translated into reality, that means for every million fully vaccinated people who fly, some 100,000 could still become infected.
Translated into actual reality, a 90 percent effective vaccine refers to the reduction in odds of a vaccinated person being infected relative to somebody who has not taken the vaccine. That is, in a given group of, say, 2,000 people, if 100 unvaccinated people would ordinarily get COVID-19, just 10 vaccinated people in the same sized group would get the virus. It doesn’t mean that 200 vaccinated people would get the virus!
For the CNN statistic to be true, it would mean that without a vaccine, everybody who flies on an airplane is guaranteed to get infected — that is, all million passengers in the scenario above would get COVID-19. This is nowhere near the truth based on months of data from people flying before vaccines were even released....

That author and their editor doesn't seem to wonder how it is that thousands of people weren't getting the 'rona from flying before the vax was available. After all, such a thing could have been tracked and studied more easily than other possible routes of transmission given that there are such things as passenger manifests. At least correlations between fliers and 'rona cases could be shown-- were they to have existed.
Weren’t the 3 index cases in the US people who had travelled via air overseas; Seattle, New York, and either San Francisco or LA?
I vaguely recall discussion back at the time alone these lines.
But I don’t recall talk about people having to take ‘rona tests prior to flying. I thought the masks were supposed to reduce transmission, but CNN apparently doesn’t think so.
I can’t say I was paying much attention to travel restrictions because I had no reason to travel nor any interest in doing so because of all the crap one has to think about if one is going to travel.
I only understand one thing
and that is that the vaccine industry is evil ; and Bill Gates is a perfect spokesperson for it
btt
CNN doesn’t understand either jouralism nor the entire concept of facts nor truth.
Mark
I’ll admit that I didn’t understand the difference either.
However how do they go about estimating how many would get COVID with no vaccine?
Over a year and there have been 32 million cases (I should have stopped the clock before the vaccines were released).
Ca. 330 million population in the USA, so 10% would be absolute maximum. Surely people have more interactions over the course of a year than they do over the course of a plane ride.
However it could be a lot less than 10%.
Also do they look for antibodies, rather than actual infection? Are they able to find natural resistance?
I realize it would be a lot harder to find volunteers to take the vaccine AND be deliberately exposed to COVID.
estimating how many would get COVID with no vaccine?
————simple really, everybody is going to get Covid, and everybody is going to die, and the masks will help you only a little, so wear your masks forever, even when you have been ‘vaccinated’, because Science. And Math. /s
How?
The same way they get all their other numbers.
They pull them out of their a$$es.
