There is no such thing as a basic utilitarian pickup any more...
My outback costs about 2k a year in depreciation. Pickups probably average double that or more. The cabs of course look great but overall quality is low which means getting out before 100k is probably cheaper than the desired alternative.
My question is how much did obozo’s strong arming of GM contribute to these crazy prices. I bet a lot.. as designed. Liberals hate pickups.
It’s not so much that the truck costs more, as it is that your money today
buys a LOT less than it used to.
Destroying the economy in every way possible, while conjuring trillions
of Dollars out of thin air to waste on kickbacks and graft, tends
to have that result, pretty much every time.
It may be time to spend it while it can still buy you something useful.

I bought a 97 4Runner limited 4WD, years ago from Craigslist. Still have it and it runs/looks perfect. In fact not a month goes by and someone will ask me if I want to sell it. Great vehicles, especially the 97.
“Typical cost to manufacture to retail price is 1 to 10. IOW if it is $66K the cost to make it was $6.6.K”
If that truck is selling for 66k it cost way more than 6K to make.
I saw the actual numbers one time. GM makes about 5-7k on a typical $40-50k truck. That is why the manufactures stopped making subcompacts they were only making about $2-3k per vehicle.
Used vehicle pricing has been going through the roof right now. Mostly because of the “free” government cash that is floating around
Crackhead’s list is full of scams and clapped up pieces of crap at premium prices, no thanks, buy new or certified and get a decent truck that will last
The market sucks for used right now
Pickups and large SUVs account for the lions share of automakers profit. They are ridiculous along with all the things the Feds mandate and all the goo gaas people insist on. Why do we have to have 9” touch screens in the dash that control everything? Analog switches and knobs worked and were reliable. Try getting one of these new trucks fixed out of warranty, bring Vaseline with you when you pay the bill.
They keep adding extras in two groups.
Comfort items like power seats, windows, and mirrors. Fancier interiors, extra seats, stereos extra seats and doors that add to cost.
Regulatory items like fuel economy boosted engine costs, aluminum beds and wheels and safety items like air bags and no bench seats.
Compare a features, price, and size of Ford Ranger right before they stopped production versus a new Ford Ranger.
Yeah you’re probably right. I’ll check around on that. btw, I don’t have the ‘instant gratification’ thing. I drive a 1997 Jeep Wrangler which I purchased new for $15K. It has nearly 200K on it and it’s still going strong. But I’d like to have a new truck...well I thought I did until last night.
we are about to retire. The wife drives a 2013 buick, will be payed for in two months. My truck is a 1997 ranger, two wheel drive. No payment on mine. i pay $64 bucks a year for registration, 27 mpg highway. No reason to change it is cheaper than dirt, just like me!!
“No freaking way is there $66,000 worth of material and labor there. The mark up has to be outlandish.”
GM makes abour $5-7k on a typical pu/suv. Wages, healthcare/pensions/cost of goods etc.all start to add up quick
I don’t know much but I’m betting that’s why they were scared sh*tless of President Donald J Trump. The man was systematically taking them down and giving us in the middle a chance.
I think some folks and industries started running a little crazy with him, real estate and housing being one of them.
Not sure if he did, it I wonder what hs thoughts were on the whole Game Stop thing and how the hedge funds were crying.
Rather than a revolution, I’d rather see the crony capitalism and these rigged schemes where only certain entities are allowed to play and everyone else is shut out.
Donald Trump was doing something about that and they got rid of him.
I bought my last three vehicles off craigslist. Still have them. All I have ever done is routing maintenance. Because of them we have tens of thousands of dollars in savings that would have gone to the UAW instead.
Union Labor drives up cost of everything
Remember the show Mary Hartman Mary Hartman ?
Well one episode her husband Tom was discontent with his job at the auto plant. No job satisfaction. His job on the production line was to put in the overhead light bulb in the interior light, no more no less, insert the bulb and for that back then he was paid some outrageous dollar amount that escapes me but was discontent because that is all he did and felt pretty useless.
One reason a F150 will drain you bank account.
Plus it aint no 60’s or 70’s F150
Same here. My vehicle is a 2007 SUV, but it’s paid for and the entire drive train and suspension are one year old.
Car companies have never had 90% margins or anything approaching that. I’d guess the true all in cost of a $50k truck is between $30-$40k including dealership costs. The marginal cost is lower of course but still nothing in the range of 10% of retail.
An EVERgreen house full of nasty little frozen children for Hillary.
We're onto you.
The 2021 Ford F-150 features a starting MSRP of just under $30,000 or $28,940. Out of these figures, the manufacturer of America’s best-selling truck, probably profits around $13,000, or almost half of the new asking price. Ford’s high-end F-150 models also bring in the bacon, ranking as the number one selling vehicle in it’s-Class over $50,000. With 800,000 F-150’s sold in one year alone, Ford is able to scale profit mountains that total over 10 billion dollars. Currently the Ford lineup includes the XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinium, Limited and Raptor, and although their trim and MSRP levels can vary greatly from one another, industry pundits assume the auto giant is averaging at least $10,000 per vehicle in pure profit.
Lease nothing other than place to live.
Cant but it out right,ya dont need it
I wish the cost accountants would weigh in.
The”cost” of a manufactured product is far more than cost of materials and wages paid to workers. There are also depreciation costs of building amd maintaining and operating the factory. There are taxes paid by the manufacturer oj the property. There are utility costs as part of factory operations.
Cost accountants, pleae weigh in. I know these items just scratch the surface.
The point is, you can’t just take cost of materials and labor, and say that is the cost of the product, for any manufactured product.
