VANITY: Looking for chemistry advice

Posted on 02/18/2021 7:58:44 AM PST by numberonepal

I'm looking for someone that knows chemistry to let me know if there are any adverse reactions when salt and silicone are in contact for extended periods of time. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanky kindly. That’s exactly what I’m looking for. I’m also thinking paper straws (like paper Boba straws). The storage would be totally dry by the way. Ideally no moisture would be able to enter the container while stored.

Looking at your name, I think I have the right person. I’m talking regular NaCl in a tube filled with salt stored inside a sealed package like a pack of smokes.

Are we making a fish tank or getting breast implants?

LOL. Neither.

Never do experimental chemistry inside your own body.

That ship sailed a long time ago.

Pharmaceutical packing expert here...

All materials, even glass, have a permeability factor.
Permeability is a function of solubility and diffusion capability.

Aqueous solutions stored in HDPE will typically have a shelf life of two years depending on storage conditions.

Put the same solution in PET or a multilayer film with nylon or other high barrier plastics and you may get up to five years shelf life.

Gases will transition a barrier more readily than solids.
A sealed glass container will lose gases and water vapor in the closure system.

Silicone tubing and gaskets can be considered inert in contact with NaCl solutions up to 85% concentration.

I still have some flexible multilayered film IV containers I made in 2006 with that still contain sufficient fill volume to meet label claim.

Thank you. Everything will be dry except maybe for essential oils. Nothing aqueous would be introduced except perhaps a minimal amount of water that lingers in dried herbs. Paper straws may be the way to go. I wouldn’t expect a shelf life of more than two years. Hopefully 6 months would be the top end and at most a year.

PS this product for mass sales would be largely disposable. For a nicer cleanable and refillable piece it could be glass or silicone.

You may want to start with PET...the stuff soda and liquor bottles are made from.

Easy to extrude and get a nice wall thickness and the apply a metallic screw cap with a high barrier liner.

Private message me if you want...
