College Admissions Essays Are Getting Shorter—and More Political
James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal ^ | February 8, 2021 | Anthony Hennen

The college admissions essay can be a stressful part of the application process for students. Like standardized test scores, however, their influence is waning. Many colleges have stopped requiring them. Even when they do, essays tend to be short—more like personal statements than a longer and more serious piece of writing.

On the bright side, not requiring them might be for the best: some in use have become compelled political declarations. However, the loss of the college essay is also a loss for challenging students and setting the tone for their next level of education. The disappearing essay is a sign of the lack of interest in the individuality of the student.

Eight schools in the University of North Carolina system require an admissions essay:

Appalachian State East Carolina NC State UNC-Asheville UNC-Chapel Hill UNC-Charlotte UNC-Greensboro UNC-Wilmington All rely on the Common App (a standardized application used by hundreds of schools) for essay prompts. NC State and UNC-Chapel Hill require additional short answers.

UNC-Greensboro also requires a 250-500 word essay for freshman merit-based aid. Western Carolina does not require an essay but will consider one “in tandem with the required documents” if students submit it. NC A&T does not require an essay and will not consider one if it is submitted. Fayetteville State requires a 250-word personal statement for some majors. Elizabeth City State, NC Central, UNC-Pembroke, and Winston-Salem State do not require an essay.

Such essays far too often aren’t written by the applicants themselves anyway.

Personally I’d sit them down in an office or put them on a Zoom call and give them a topic to write about for 10 or 15 minutes instead.

Kids have no life experience beyond message boards and videogames.

So all they have is opinions which have been drilled into their heads from public schools.

They are no longer learning centers. They are profit centers for liberals and socialists.

...and more political.

What kind of politics, pray tell?

Because if you think they’d admit a student who wrote anything remotely conservative...

Well, I won’t try to sell you the Brooklyn Bridge. Maybe the Triborough, though.

Not true, there are some great young kids out there with both independent thought and a strong conservative base.....

Forget about the College Experience and find something you really enjoy doing and attend a school that specializes in that field.

Yes, “orange man bad” indicates a higher L.Q.

My current high school senior applied to a number of colleges, more than his older brothers did because his GPA was a lot lower than theirs.

The more selective colleges tended to require an essay, which I do like—it does show interest in the individual to require one.

But this cracked me up—the University of Hawaii at Manoa—which has an awful, primitive website and admits almost everyone and specifically doesn’t ask for final senior year grades (don’t ask don’t tell, senioritis :), nevertheless requires an essay. I liked that about them.

It’s so easy to apply online to lots of colleges now—takes about 5 minutes—that I suspect colleges add essay requirements to weed out the non-serious candidates, those who are applying on a whim.

At most colleges today writing “Orange man bad” in crayon is good enough to get in.

Essay that guarantees admission to 98% of colleges:

“In his first month of office, Joe Biden has already proven to be the greatest President in US President. He has saved the environment, cured the coronavirus, ended racism, ended unemployment, and guaranteed world peace for a generation.”

Your kids can thank me later!

They are selecting for the dumbest schlubs who will bury themselves in the largest amount of student loan debt.

All the universities care about is harvesting 18-year olds for their student loans. Nothing else matters.
