I still refuse to follow the idolatry of Michael King. He was another communist radical who gave good speeches.
“It is very likely that President Abraham Lincoln got his dark curly hair from a black ancestor. Many of his contemporaries believed he had slave ancestors.”
Wow. Just wow.
As I recall, the term “African-American” came into use in the late 1980s, on the suggestion of Jesse Jackson.
We can recount how other terms have been used over the years.
The term “colored” is now considered offensive, but was a preferred term when the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was established.
The term “Negro” fell into disuse, but was a preferred term when the United Negro College Fund was set up.
At one time, black was considered offensive, but because a preferred term in the late 60s/early 70s, when Negro was no longer being used.
We could ask other questions, such as why “colored people” is offensive, but “people of color” is allowable.
Following the turmoil of the early ‘60s Civil Rights Movement most Americans have willingly agreed to refer to the descendents of African slaves by whatever term they preferred. Of course, as the preferred term changed respectful Americans of goodwill readily adopted the new term, time and again. And, of course, as soon as another new term comes along, it too will quickly become de rigueur. ADAS (American Descendants of African Slaves) have only to reach consensus on a new term and most Americans will immediately begin using it.
Just a quick point: The only “Systemic Racism” that I can think of, where race is a legal part of the system, is Affirmative Action.
