NY has been losing seats for decades. When it was the most populous state, it peaked at 45 seats from 1933-53. Dropped to 43 from 1953-63. 41 from 1963-73. 39 from 1973-83. Lost 5 seats to 34 from 1983-93. Dropped 3 to 31 from 1993-2003. Dropped to 29 from 2003-13. Dropped to 27 in 2013 to date. Dropping to 25 as of 2023 would be about right.
Yup. We have a lot less power in the chamber with the power of the purse than we did decades ago.
Sucks to be us, but good news for our republic.
I marvel at how thoroughly New York is dying. Upstate is basically a depressed Rust Belt region. New York City is regressing into a crime-ridden hellhole with an extra economic gut punch from COVID restrictions. The state as a whole has nothing to attract migrants. How does a state like that recover? And does it have a bottom it will eventually hit?
