Escape From New York: So Many People Are Fleeing Cuomo’s Empire State the Population Drain Could Cost Them Two House Seats

Population estimates from the Census Bureau indicate so many people are fleeing New York state that they could lose up to two congressional seats in the coming round of reapportionment.

The latest round of numbers indicates New York’s population dropped by more than any other state in the nation based on percentage and total numbers.

A net total of 126,355 people fled the Empire State between July 2019 and July 2020, marking a 0.65% percent drop.

Spectrum News reports that the drop is despite new births and an influx of immigrants, and could lead to a loss of two seats depending on which numbers are used for reapportionment.

“New York could lose at least one House district based on the initial estimates of its April 1 population,” Spectrum explains. “Two seats could be lost if the congressional reapportionment is based on July 1 estimates, according to Jeff Wice, a New York redistricting expert.”

It would be easy to suggest the population drain is based on pandemic fears – New York has experienced the highest number of deaths in the country.

Governor Andrew Cuomo’s own actions have contributed to that death toll.

...

But, as political commentator Jeff Dunetz states, “New Yorkers have been running from the states’ burdensome taxes for at least the past two decades.”

Indeed, a 2009 Wall Street Journal report shows that between 2000 and 2008 New York saw a population drop of 8 percent, noting that “taxes are driving people away.”

Yup. We have a lot less power in the chamber with the power of the purse than we did decades ago.

Sucks to be us, but good news for our republic.

That’s OK. The ChiComs are buying up all the real estate at bargain-basement prices.

That's the funny part. The Chicoms will buy it and then the cities will use eminent domain to take over the office building no longer being used and use them to put up homeless people.

It's actually worse than the numbers indicate. The 126,000 population is a net drop. In other words, if you look at the number of productive people who left the state, it is likely far higher than that. While productive people have left, people seeking the state's generous "entitlements" or "asylum" have flocked to the state. The result will no doubt add more stress to the state's tenuous public finance position.

"an influx of immigrants"

see, de Blah-dio has been told this is the plan, empty out NYC so he can refill with immigrants.

But.

The current de Blah-dio dystopia, as so fruitfully rendered by Andy Cohen on CNN's NYE rant, the quick tipping point of incoming NYC commercial property defaults vastly exceeds the timeframe of any de Blah-dio 'replacement' strategem, or the possibility of even 'replacing' the diaspora. That discontinuity will quite possibly drive NYC off its precarious perch as the 'world's capitol' in the next 5 years. Which may have been the point all along...

It would be extremely funny if one of those lost House seats was AOC’s.

Redistricting in NYS will be done by a new system. Not sure how AOC will wind up.

The 10-member commission comprises the following members:

Two members must be appointed by the temporary president of the New York State Senate.
Two members must be appointed by the speaker of the New York State Assembly.
Two members must be appointed by the minority leader of the New York State Senate.
Two members must be appointed by the minority leader of the New York State Assembly.
Two members must appointed by the aforementioned eight commissioners. These two appointees cannot have been enrolled in the top two major political parties in the state.

What ticks me off is that some of them are coming here, but they vote for the same damn Democrat politicians and policies that effed-up New York.

To me the really disappointing part is that Cal and NYS got MORE liberal after lots of liberals departed. You can see the makeup of the legislatures.

If they’re Conservatives, we’d be happy to take them here in PA. If they’re Chinese Democrats, stay away from PA.

Trust me, you don't want them even if they call themselves conservatives. A real conservative would have left long before the taxes ran them out. I live in the south and what New Yorkers call conservative would be a screaming leftist here. They usually start with "this place would be great if there were decent government services". It then moves on to "my neighbor's always target shooting over there. That scares me, nobody needs to do that, he might hit my house. The sheriff should do something about that".

Liberals hate paying taxes more than conservatives. They think "the rich" should pay taxes, not them. Of course their definition of "the rich" is anyone making more than them. Don't think for a second that just because they're fleeing high taxes they're not leftists.

You’re correct. There’s a big difference between a NYC Conservative, and a Texas Conservative.

When Trump is re-elected to a 2nd term later this upcoming week I hope it is OK for apportionment articles that include illegal alien loss to be allowed by the msm censors.

That could eliminate another 5 seats from CA. NY, IL, NC, TX, CO should also lose.

True, but the Japanese did the same thing in the 80s and then someone tanked the market and the losses Japan experienced still depress its economy. Who was the someone ? Deeper than the Deep State.

I marvel at how thoroughly New York is dying. Upstate is basically a depressed Rust Belt region. New York City is regressing into a crime-ridden hellhole with an extra economic gut punch from COVID restrictions. The state as a whole has nothing to attract migrants. How does a state like that recover? And does it have a bottom it will eventually hit?
