Jews and Catholics and folks of other religions who don’t believe a word that their doctrine teaches for the most part shouldn’t be addressed as belonging to any religion. it’s like an ex baseball player saying he’s a baseball player. He’s not anynore.
Breaking the tenets of the doctrine will happen occasionally because we are human but that is a lot different than not believing in them at all.

Both Catholics and Jews provide for a person to disqualify him/ herself from continued affiliation for the most serious transgressions But theres no mechanism announcing that. Both faiths also provide for excommunication by the clergy - which is visible-but neither wants, does it very often. The result is as you say A bunch of apostates running around claiming theyre still affiliated. Including a few in the clergy itself ( sane for some protestant churches) Its false advertising
