I think the point is that the 870 and 500/590 pumps are commonly used, affordable shotguns that can be effectively used for defense purposes - "social work" as Jeff Cooper called it.

Sure, your Saiga is awesome, but how many of those are out there, compared to the Remington 870 or Mossberg 500/590?

A surprising number and increasing as they’re now being made in the US. Chinese copies of them are going for about $400, too.

Sure, if all you can afford or get is a pump gun, well, it is what it is. But if you have the time and money to lay in stuff ahead of time, you can avoid a lot of problems that you can have with pump guns by getting a semiauto.

Worth noting that the US military is replacing their pump guns with Benellis to eliminate operator-induced error under stress.

I would also point out that Jeff Cooper’s ‘social work’ was mostly aimed at the more common home invader/burglar team/gang crew sort of thing and less ‘mass mob defense’. A pump is better than showing up with granpappy’s old over/under or side by side Fudd gun, sure, but once you’ve got more than five or eight assailants, you have problems. In these scenarios, you’re looking at 20+.
