‘The President Was Not Encouraging’: What Obama Really Thought About Biden

Behind the friendship was a more complicated relationship, which now drives the former vice president to prove his partner wrong.

The way Joe Biden explained it on the campaign trail in Iowa, he and his friend Barack Obama had long talked of Biden succeeding him in the White House, continuing the work of their administration. It was only tragic fate, in the form of the loss of his son Beau, that intervened. Now, after four years, the plan could finally go forward, with Biden running as the administration’s true heir.

Barack Obama, Biden solemnly declared in his campaign announcement in Philadelphia, is “an extraordinary man, an extraordinary president.” On the social media-generated #BestFriendsDay, the campaign posted a picture of “Joe” and “Barack” friendship bracelets. Biden relabeled himself an “Obama-Biden Democrat.”

But behind all the BFF bonhomie is a much more complicated story—one fueled by the misgivings the 44th president had about the would-be 46th, the deep hurt still felt among Biden’s allies over how Obama embraced Hillary Clinton as his successor, and a powerful sense of pride that is driving Biden to prove that the former president and many of his aides underestimated the very real strengths of his partner. “He was loyal, I think, to Obama in every way in terms of defending and standing by him, even probably when he disagreed with what Obama was doing,” recalled Leon Panetta, Obama’s secretary of Defense. “To some extent, [he] oftentimes felt that that loyalty was not being rewarded.”

Next week, Barack and Michelle Obama are each headlining different days of Biden’s convention, a lineup meant to display party unity and a smooth succession from its most popular figure to its current nominee. But past tensions between Obama’s camp and Biden’s camp have endured, forming some hairline fractures in the Democratic

“‘Biden’s own academic career was unimpressive—he repeated the third grade, earned all Cs and Ds in his first three semesters at the University of Delaware except for As in P.E., a B in “Great English Writers” and an F in ROTC, and graduated 76th in his Syracuse Law School class of 85 students.’”

I will cut him a little slack on his grades. I cut him no slack about lying about it.

I was cut from university due to “Academic Insufficiency” That was a polite way of saying, “hey boy you flunked out.”

I spent a few years on the drilling rigs (that will get your mind right) and went back to school and made outstanding grades and took many chem courses as electives though not required and other science courses that were not required for my degree in geology. This paid off for me big time a few years later.

When the oil field went down the tubes again in 1983 I had all the prerequisites for pharmacy school. Thus I did a 6 year major in 2-3/4 years by going to school year round.

I was 35 years old then with a wife and child. Joe could not have done that. He has not the inner strength.

I think that that experience (3rd grade, take two) was where Oh-No-Joe learned how to cheat.   (Otherwise, he also would have flunked out in 4th grade, 5th grade, 6th grade, etc., and would probably STILL be going to school!)

I remember Senator Phil Gramm used to give a stump speech that said
“I failed the third, seventh, and ninth grades”. It was meant to show how he overcame adversity and a learning disability, but all anyone heard was “this guys is a moron”. Reminds me of Biden.

That does sound a bit like Biden, doesn't it?   (I can picture Biden saying, "I was in fifth grade, when I was first old enough to vote.")        :-)
