Not sure about that, but our term "cannibal" comes from the indigenous people of the Caribbean--the Caribs. The explorer Verrazano, for whom the Verrazano Narrows are named, was killed and eaten by cannibals on a later voyage.

But Cacambo in Candide explains why cannibalism can be OK for people who don't have better food to eat.

Ever notice the same people criticizing Columbus don’t want to criticize the indigenous people who were cannibals. It’s strange, really, this modern-day morality.
