I think some of them try to dismiss the reports of cannibalism as lies made up by the Europeans. But a few years ago there was scientific confirmation of cannibalism on the part of some Indians in what is now Arizona or New Mexico (600 or 700 years ago).
True - the story is that Columbus lied, saying those people were cannibals in order to justify enslaving them. But, then why didn’t he claim the other indigenous people were cannibals? It sounds as if he sailed right into a mess of trouble between tribes, and he ended up involved, at the same time struggling to keep his own crew under control.
