It’s not that hard.
Sometimes you get fooled and identify the wrong Asian country the person was born in, but even in those cases, guessing the ancestry by looking at certain features is usually spot on.

Took my Thai/Vietnamese wife on a vacation to Arizona/New Mexico. In a grocery store near the reservations, my wife sort of disappeared. I had a hard time finding her. At least from the back, they do look alike, LOL.
And on a trip to Indonesia, locals at the markets would say things to her in Indonesian. She had no clue.
But over there, there are so, so many different ancient tribal origins and whatnot that it’s hard to tell sometimes. But I find it fascinating.
