A couple of weeks ago we had a good discussion on Starlink the new space based internet service being developed by SpaceX, one of Elon Musk's companies.
A place you could sign up for possibly becoming a public beta tester was talked about.
I would really love to see this service come close to living up to the promises it's making.
Another launch of 60 satellites is set for July 10 I think.....
Here is a link to a you tube video that is quite informative, the end of the video is marketing BS, but the first 2/3's is pretty good.
Plus here is a link to the Starlink Reddit that has a ton of useful information about Starlink....Pictures of ground stations being constructed and what the ground based dish will look like when mounted on a roof......

Ping!
So what he’s saying is the speed of 100 Mbps up and 40 Mbps down, with a <=30 ms latency.
Not bad for rural areas. Big cities and suburbs will be faster on cable.
I just went and signed up for updates. See what happens. Not many options here.
The mounting of a roof dish is the problem - they are ugly and many will not use because of that
I live in rural Alabama. I’m lucky, because I’m right on the route the Cable TV company put their main line.
Still, my speed is slow, and I won’t pay for faster, as my speed is good enough for what I do, including streaming and teleconferencing.
I will probably get Starlink, if the price is a bargain.
But here is my stats on Spectrum Cable, from Speed Test by Ookla:
PING ms 24 DOWNLOAD Mbps 26.70 UPLOAD Mbps 2.88
The video indicates the same.....if it works as advertised, it will be a game changer for rural America.
It will also remove an obstacle some might have with leaving metropolitan areas....
Think about the chaos and destruction you will have in NYC, Chicago, Minneapolis, Seattle, etc....if they continue to defund and demoralize the police and anarchy becomes the norm....
People will leave and having really good internet at a reasonable price will be fantastic if you could also work remotely...
Directv and Dish have made satellite TV work and their dishes have gotten larger over the years....
I’ve had directv for years.....I would put a Starlink dish up in a minute if it works as advertised...
Do they throttle you if you go over a certain amount of usage?
For the consumer they are broadcast only - one-way communications.
Found out the hard way that Directv does not do internet in rural areas. They BUNDLE with a “third party,” (Hughesnet) but cannot transfer personal information. So you have to establish your own account with the”bundled” provider. That makes two bills and higher costs. Satellite internet is marginal at best and goes downhill from there because of weather. Would not recommend either company!

...
For rural areas all over the world, and the military has a strong interest.
Cost and data caps is what I’m waiting to hear.

...
They only want to sell in rural areas. If they don’t get a single subscription in cities they’ll be happy. Most likely they’ll have to turn people away because Starlink isn’t designed to work in high density locations.
True but you can get a Satellite Phone, it may not work great but it works and satellite phones have been around for years, certainly the have newer technology now versus when they first appeared...
Next launch is Wednesday. They’ll be getting close to two or three Starlink launches a month. Each launch has close to 60 satellites depending on whether there’s a rideshare.
Yeah, like nobody has used satellite TV...duh.
What mounting of a roof dish?
These satellites are in low earth orbit, moving fairly quickly across the sky.
A parabolic dish would have to be extremely sophisticated to constantly track them.
The ground terminal for the Starlink system is said to be the size of a pizza box.
No external antenna was mentioned.
Had Dish once - horrible.
The argument isn’t that they have some customers such as yourself, just that a dish on may homes is considered ugly and limits resale as well as customer base.
Dishes used to be 4-6 feet in diameter, and then they got much smaller - now apparently they are getting bigger again.
