Winston Churchill has been called the greatest political watchman in history, and the man whose foresight saved the Western world during World War II. But would he have developed such phenomenal foresight and accomplished such an astounding feat if he hadn't been loved, taught and nurtured as a child? Churchill's parents almost totally neglected him. But the void they left was filled, as best it could be, by another figurea person that each of us today owes a considerable debt of gratitude to. This episode tells her inspiring story.
That would be Jenny, right?
I have not watched but would guess that this influencer was his nanny. He has publicly expressed his affection towards her in writing and speeches over his lifetime.
Just a guess!
Jennie was his mom about whom he wrote: “I loved her dearly but at a distance.” As a child, he had to love her at a distance because she had no interest in him until he was older and, in her own words “interesting.” So there was another woman who played both father and mother to him in an extraordinary way.
His nanny, Elizabeth Everest.
You’re right. It was his nanny!
Thanks!

The woman in question is Elizabeth Anne Everest and she was Winston’s nanny and companion during Winston’s childhood.
Quite amazing how his parents treated him. Like a bastard son to both of them.
Thank you for bringing this pod cast resource to my attention.
In his 5 volume, “History of WWII”, Churchill mentions that the only person who gave him any affection as a child was his Nanny, Mrs. Everest.
Is that the Six Volume Second World War set...?
I always forget whether it is 5 or 6. I actually have them all and each one must be close to a thousand pages. Mine are paperback.
On Deployment back in ‘17-’18 I took and read the entire set... The best Set of History books I’ve ever read... The Man could Write...
Indeed, really enjoy reading his books. I recall him commenting or even joking about his voluminous works. Something along the lines of him being paid by the word. At various times, that was their only income.
Yes it truly is amazing how parents of that era viewed children. Thank you for listening!
My wife and I were just talking about how the mistakes of parents can cause a ripple effect, good or bad, for generations. In the case of Winston, it sounds like he was better off without parents and that we owe Mrs. Everest a considerable debt of gratitude.
Churchill is one of history’s most fascinating and one of my favorite characters.
This massive poem by Macaulay has embedded that well known fragment:
Then out spake brave Horatius,
The Captain of the Gate:
``To every man upon this earth
Death cometh soon or late.
And how can man die better
Than facing fearful odds,
For the ashes of his fathers,
And the temples of his gods,
Here is one I got from Paul Harvey on the radio.
Sir Alexander Fleming’s Father saved Churchill’s life when he was a boy. He was swimming in a lake in Scotland.
Churchill’s Father offered to reward Fleming. He said he did not want anything for himself but wondered if he would send his child to college.
During WWII, Churchill’s life was saved by the very scarce antibiotic penicillin, discovered by guess who?
