A recent study revealed that 62 percent of college students acknowledge that they have cheated on tests and coursework, and that online courses have facilitated more opportunities for students to engage in academic dishonesty. According to the National College Testing Association, online classes leave universities “more vulnerable to scandal and controversy related to academic dishonesty.”

A new study examining cheating among college students revealed that 62 percent of students have cheated, and that their cheating habits increase if they are working in “unproctored environments,” according to a survey by the National College Testing Association.

Well my daughter graduated from college last week. Her finals were papers and presentations done via Zoom. The only test she took was a proctored nurses exit exam via Zoom where she had to leave the camera on.

I have a Nephew who got a PHD in physics from the University of Chicago. He then got another PHD from U of Phoenix. He had to go to Phoenix to take a final in person.

That’s what I do, with my online classes. We videotape each college student taking the final. I review every video. They have to scan the entire room with their webcam, including the desk surface, and show a picture ID before starting. Works pretty good.

Shocked! Shocked, I say!

But really, the bulk of college classes are so easy these days, they should be embarrassed to cheat.

That’s why I think online should be for learning, but you still have to qualify yourself at a professional college or union, where their reputation takes a hit if they qualify unqualified people.

I wonder if students graduating this year and the next couple years will be considered unhireable.

Some will, some won't. Employers can't hold job candidate accountable for the masses cheating or recently tarnished college reputations. (Although, I question the reputations of most institutions of learning on other grounds.)

Employers who do a good job recruiting will be able to discern students that actually acquired the knowledge to be successful. But knowledge is only part of the equation. Character and work ethic are equally important. Both of those relate to how one performs in college.

I have a hunch that the amount of cheating is related the large number of people in college that have no business being there. They are not able to perform and have to cheat. I'm not a clairvoyant, but give me five minutes with a recent college grad in an interview and I'll tell you if he belonged in college or not. Most colleges ruined the meaning of grades years ago. So, what a kid received grade-wise and how he achieved the grades has little meaning. Bottom line, is the kid bright? Does he have knowledge? Will he work hard? And will he do the right things?

Way before the internet, I knew of lots of people that cheated in their classes. Depends on the person.

Are they trying to stop people from attending online classes now?

“I wonder if students graduating this year and the next couple years will be considered unhireable.”

If it’s someone with a degree in “Shakespeare’s Vagina Complex”, not a problem. But if the degree is in engineering, for example, WATCH OUT!
