Humorless, intolerant leftist academics are a force to be reckoned with on many college campuses, and a new case at the University of North Texas (UNT) pushes the envelope.
After earning his PhD in mathematics from Baylor University in spring 2019, Nathaniel Hiers found employment at UNT. He began teaching full-time as an adjunct faculty member in the fall semesterthree sections of linear algebra and one of calculus. The mathematics department thought highly enough of Dr. Hiers that, in November, it notified him that he was invited to renew his contract for the coming semester. Hiers promptly emailed back to say hed accept the schools offer.
Trouble for Hiers began, however, on November 25. He was relaxing in the faculty lounge that afternoon, waiting for a colloquium to begin, and noticed a stack of fliers. They werent identified as a university document and had been left anonymously. The subject of the fliers was microaggressions and the argument they made was that such speech, although unintentional, is harmful to some individuals physical and psychological health. Therefore, faculty members were encouraged to avoid them.
The flier gave a number of examples of microaggression such as saying, I believe the most qualified person should get the job and America is a land of opportunity.
Those expressions, according to the flier, are harmful because they support the myth of meritocracy and promote color blindness. Another example of a microaggression listed was being forced to choose Male or Female when completing basic forms.
This idea that certain groups in the population are so sensitive to and easily harmed by such apparently benign utterances has been around for many years. Some academics believe it, while others find it to be just a weak and unproven assertion.

Anyone who actually thinks that being forced to choose Male or Female when completing basic forms is some sort of painful experience needs to be locked up in a rubber room, not catered to.
If someone wants to go undercover, that’s not the way to do it.
I was already thinking that when I first saw the thread.
C
in before the picture of the UNT mug.
It was a MACRO aggression to accost him, threaten him, give him a chance to recant and save himself, then fire him.
It is so ironic that the same people who get their panties all twisted up over a trivial, minuscule perceived affront arent afraid to roll out the big cannon and obliterate their enemies with MACROAGGRESSIONS. Their responses are always like Hitler annexing the Sudetenland.
I need to learn how to post pictures.
Exactly 3 lectures, same material. Hard part would be grading & dealing with students.
A word to the wise is sufficient.
And yet, idiot parents are lined up around the block to get their kids into these institutions.
What should be done....though of course it will never happen.....is that state boards of regents and the like should categorize diversity of thought as part of required diversity. That of course means Leftists need not apply to Academic positions for many years until American universities have a faculty whose worldviews reflect those of the American people rather than those of Marxists - cultural and traditional.
THE PROBLEM in America is TOO MUCH GOVERNMENT, period!!!!! This country was not founded on FULL TIME people making six-figured salaries and multi-millions taking bribes!! They were suppose to be part time, but not in Amerika today, nope, they are full time thieves and bought and paid for crooks of the liberal elites.
A chalkboard??? What is this? The olden days?
Gonna be interesting when a student feels micro-agressed by a “right” angle.
I remember getting my first calculus exam back and feeling very proof-aggressed!
More and more it’s time for people to understand Aaron Zelman:
If every German Jew and anti-Nazi had possessed a Mauser rifle, twenty rounds and the will to use it, Adolf Hitler would be a footnote to the history of the Weimar Republic.
and Alexander Solzhenitsyn:
And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?... The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin’s thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If...if...We didn’t love freedom enough. And even more we had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.
Liberal academics at the University of Tennessee couldn’t justify the liberal arts classes so they put the degrees of Microbiology and other sciences into the B.A. program and after four years one received a B.A. instead of a B.S. Because those disciplines were in the B.A. program the administration required those students to take a certain number of liberal arts courses. Ridiculous. I lacked two of these liberal arts courses to receive degrees in Microbiology, Biology, Zoology, and a minor in Biochemistry. I filled in two science courses instead of a liberal class instead.
As far as teaching it - there does seem to be several ways of going about each which take awhile for students to understand why it is so powerful and get bogged down in the mechanics of matrix vector multipication and miss what its can do and model - There is no royal road to mathematics
Sounds like only 4 hours of classes a day.
The best response to an accusation of microaggression is to offer an immediate, unconditional microapology.
How foolish they look.
“Schmidt made it clear that he objected to Hiers mockery”. Now you know who left the crap on the table.
