...The problem with attributing deaths to the virus begins with the fundamental problem of all scientific endeavor, which is that events in the real world have not just one but many causes. As a common example closely related to the subject of this post, many patients with cancer get pneumonia at the final stage of their disease. Did they die from the cancer or from the pneumonia? Or from both? When you look at the CDC statistics, you will see that each death has been assigned uniquely to just one of the major categories. In this case, each death has been assigned either to cancer or to pneumonia, not both. But how did someone decide that death A was from cancer, but death B was from pneumonia, when the patients had both and were in terminal condition? Generally, there is not much riding on the decision, and if it is made arbitrarily — half to one, half to the other — that’s probably fine.
This time, people very justifiably want to know if some $3 to 5 trillion (or more) of our economy has been lost for a good reason, versus from panic stemming in large part from artificially inflated statistics...

I could understand the caution early on (hey, better back in Feb), as this is “unknown”. However, after a rather short time, we seem to understand it a bit more (still not perfectly), and I’m still not sure this is the Black Plague and deserves all this hooplah.
Instead it is causing my recently widowed elderly mother and my young son more depression and anxiety as they get major cabin fever and go stir crazy.

Depends on who you talk to. And everyone is right......just ask them. To many end of the earth numbers when a conservative president is in office and nobody gives a $hit when it is a liberal president so everyone goes about their business and more die than otherwise. Location...location....

They’ll be drilling into covid data for years.
Frustrating figures come out:
‘Almost all deaths’ from NY give high mortality (yet still many ‘excess deaths’).
Going from infection ratio of presenting patients give low mortality (but presenting patients are those with symptoms).
Gonna take many studies to figure it all out with apt denominators and numerators.
They’ll be too late to help now, of course.
Without people making it worse by sticking the sick in nursing homes and intubating them?
