How may virus particles (visions) does it take to start an infection?

I don’t think anyone knows for sure but over the decades, at times like this, one ponders these things. My thoughts go along these lines, some things are known, much not. A lot of information is “proprietary”.

If one viral particle (virion) is inhaled and lands on a nasal epithelium cell, on a specific receptor, it can...

Well, the wife’s tapping her foot. She’s got another 8,000 words in there just busting to get out and I’ve only let her vent about 2,000 so far today (she’s been telecommuting) so I have to go listen now.

If you guys want I’ll do it again tomorrow.

That must be another one by the same author. Fatal Vision is the one where the doctor murdered his family and blamed it on some hippies. Doctor or no, they locked him up tight!

Oppps. You are correct. Goodness. That brings back memories as well. I was supposed to go to Ft Bragg for work with those folks and the Colonel called me in and said, “If you go there it will ruin your career.” Because of that book. I had completely forgotten that.

But it just shows, sometimes when you think it’s the end of your damn world, you’re wrong. Seriously wrong. I guess which is what reminded me of him. CWO4. We called him “Chief”.

After my head injury, which was bad and over a dozen years ago, I NEVER thought I would see happiness again.

My mom and girlfriend got me a kitten while i was in ICU because my mom heard it helps people get better.

My aunt was calling funeral homes.

I didn’t need them :)

The headaches and stiffness on the left side for about 4 to 5 years was SO BAD that I entered a psych ward once a year for 2 weeks to keep me safe from myself ending the terrible pain.

It was like a retreat :) It worked. I gathered myself together and fought for another year each time.

I lost everything I had..money, job..everything. But my life.

About 6 years ago, things started to get better.

The headaches were more and more bearable and now are gone almost completely.

The insomnia, which was 40 to 60 hours long at times, happens maybe once or twice a year.

I wake up with tremors and vivid dreams and muscle spasms. After 10 minutes, I am good for the day.

God gave me a miracle.

I’m rarely thankful for it and I need to start being thankful.

At 51, I need to be enjoying life more instead of hiding from it out of fear of what I’m not quite sure.

OK i’m done and you can bill me for the therapy session

what a tangent i went off on!! :)

sorry!

Truth be told I’d been wondering for months why the hell he was still working for the Army but I figured it wasn’t my business.

Not at all. I get it. Every day is a gift. When you think about it, no matter who you are.

In any case, the question the public should consider when wishing to wear a mask is, “What is your goal? Why do you want to wear a mask?” Because if the answer is,”So I don’t spread it to others”, then literally any fabric hanging over your face will suffice. Something to catch the virus laden droplets and aerosols you exhale. A bandana, a surgical mask, just about anything. Since most people are not that philanthropic as a priority if you want to protect yourself it must really be a “respirator”.

Common sense, yet we are told not to. And even a t-shirt can reduce the viral load from another person.

If a quarantine saves just one child's or one old fart’s life, it's worth it.

No it is not, when its basically across the board. We can save lives young and old without the national stay at home recourse for most all people. It will end up costing more lives via obesity, accidents and suicides, lack of immunity, and and lack of money for quality health care. And freedom and societies social health.

The cheapest, best, theoretically 100% fool proof is everyone wears a mask and if that is the case there is no added benefit from a respirator. If you stay out of downwind from someone without a mask you’ll be OK as well.

This thread was talking about masks and viral loads, and what might be considered a large enough load to get infected. Found the following recent article today:

https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/04/coronavirus-pandemic-airborne-go-outside-masks/609235/?utm_source=pocket-newtab

Excerpt:

In February, scientists in Wuhan, China—where the coronavirus outbreak originated—sampled the air in various public areas, and showed that the virus was either undetectable or found in extremely low concentrations. The only exceptions were two crowded sites, one in front of a department store and another next to a hospital. Even then, each cubic meter of air contained fewer than a dozen virus particles. (No one knows the infectious dose of SARS-CoV-2—that is, the number of particles needed to start an infection—but for the original SARS virus of 2003, one study estimated somewhere between 43 and 280.)

These particles might not even have been infectious. “I think we’ll find that like many other viruses, [SARS-CoV-2] isn’t especially stable under outdoor conditions like sunlight or warm temperatures,” Santarpia said. “Don’t congregate in groups outside, but going for a walk, or sitting on your porch on a sunny day, are still great
ideas.”

*************************************

The article is pretty good - goes into some of the arguments about how we don’t really know if the regular flu is “airborne”.

Go back and read the First day of Q&A, I think we answered most of that then and yesterday. Of course you are correct, an airborne protein that reacts with the test doesn’t necessarily mean it represents a functioning virus. “Out of an abundance of caution” is a phrase we have heard repeatedly in recent years. I think the safe, efficient, and effective way forward would be “everybody wears a bandana” when in public.”

I just thought it was interesting as it talks about what they thought an effective dose was for SARS-cov1.

“airborn”
_____________
I believe am helping at least some people understand by explaining the difference between “large droplet short range transmission” which IS indicated in SARS and COVID-19, and “small-droplet long-range transmission” which is not. (So far, I hope and pray, and I honestly believe even with the SSE’s!)
