I worked at a newspaper years ago. I noticed that the journalists back then did not know History, or English Lit, or Geography, of Political Theory, or Philosophy, or Art, or really anything. They typed fast. They managed to make their deadlines. That was really their primary skill.
Additionally, one would think that they would seek out and follow the News so that they understood what was going on. Bu they don’t. they just parrot what they are told to parrot. We know the News better than the journalists.
Add Math and Science. The innumeracy is astounding.
I have worked with people who have either communications or journalism degrees. The majority of them , As you said, are only good at typing fast or looking pretty on camera. They dont know history, they dont know current affairs, and they dont have any common sense whatsoever.
I once worked with someone who was a communications major in college but ended up not working in the news media industry. That was one of the most frustrating people to work with because they thought since they have a communications degree they were the best person To Communicate any bit of information to any other employee or customer, etc. Almost every email was written like a news article designed to be understood By someone with a middle school level education. An email that shouldve been one or two sentences would end up being several paragraphs containing so much superfluous and useless information you had to read it several times to figure out what they were trying to say. And if you dear only sent an email that has a few sentences but quickly and concisely Conveys all the necessary information, they will almost always write a two or three paragraph response to it about how it was confusing and how it made them feel.
