If the coronavirus is spreading this rapidly among hospital workers, what chance do the rest of us have? What we are witnessing in China right now is absolutely unprecedented. Despite the lockdown of major city after major city, this mysterious new coronavirus continues to spread like wildfire, and Chinese government officials are becoming visibly frustrated. The number of confirmed cases has nearly doubled over the past seven days, and that is extremely concerning. But even more alarming is the unofficial information which has been leaking out of China. According to the South China Morning Post, “at least 500 hospital staff in Wuhan” have now been infected…

At least 500 hospital staff in Wuhan had been infected with the deadly new strain of coronavirus by mid January, multiple medical sources have confirmed, leaving hospitals short-staffed and causing deep concern among health care workers.

While the government has reported individual cases of health care workers becoming infected, it has not provided the full picture, and the sources said doctors and nurses had been told not to make the total public.

There have been numerous reports that indicate there isn’t enough equipment to sufficiently protect medical personnel in Wuhan, and that is probably the biggest reason why this number is so high.

I think you might be missing an important aspect of this: This virus is much more contagious. Nearly twice as many people are hospitalized. About 1/5 of them need ICU treatment, including ventilation and breathing apparatus. No, you probably won’t die from this. But if you need any type of medical treatment during this, you are shit out of luck. The system will be overwhelmed. Take a stroll around a hospital now—in the middle of flu season. There are no available beds. Add a few hundred people to every facility. The truck drivers that bring your food won’t be driving around. People will shut down shops, stores, and factories. Schools would close. The economy will simply stop. I guess you can go out with a mask—but those have not been available since the middle of January. There is a lot more about this which should generate some concern. Note: I am not saying panic. I am saying you should be thinking about what steps you might take if this breaks out in the US. But, be sure everyone else will be thinking the same thing at the same time

Partner, 90% of the pharmaceuticals come from China. This is the current supply chain on prescription drugs. We have folks who are killing us with prescriptions drugs.

No, it’s higher for resolved cases. Your 3% figure assumes everybody currently officially infected will survive. We know that is not going to happen. We’re looking at a mortality rate in the high teens in Wuhan, where containment has clearly failed and the medical infrastructure is overwhelmed.

Outside of Wuhan, but still inside China, containment is certain to fail. Outside of China, containment appears to be holding. Where containment is holding and the medical infrastructure is not saturated, mortality should remain low, but still way above the flu.

The rest of the world is about weeks behind Wuhan. Will that make the difference and allow us to successfully stop this thing? The pessimists say not a prayer. The optimists say it looks good. The realists say we won’t know for a couple of weeks. And the uninformed say it’s just the flu.

And nobody but the delusional trust the Chinese numbers. That is validated by their past history of lying. How badly are they lying now?

So, don’t panic, but prepare for a solid month of not leaving your house, maybe two, just in case.

China is a brutal Communist dictatorship. They will lie, cover up, minimize, omit information, imprison, and kill—anything to maintain absolute control. The Soviet Union was like that, Russia is becoming more and more like that.

When the Chernobyl disaster occurred, the initial plan (with Gorbachev in the room) was to completely cover up what happened. Then “The Americans” spoiled their cover-up. We called the Soviets and said, “Our satellites are sending us alarming images of Chernobyl, what’s going on?” At that point I’m sure Gorbachov shat himself, busted by “The Americans.”

Actually, I don’t give two shits about anyone or anything in Communist China. Unlike some here, I view them absolutely as the enemy. The more resources they have to use to fight the virus, the better. Less for Communist China to invade and subjugate other counties. I agree. They have 1.4 billion people and the virus is pretty wide spread so we know there are many more dead than they’re saying

Dunno if y'all saw, but a major Chinese company that's been giving out the official numbers had a leak a week or two ago with crazy high numbers for a short time. Something like 1/2 the number of recoveries, and 70x the number of deaths. Granted, these are probably pretty close to the real Chinese unfudged numbers, but no clue how close they are to the real actual numbers (cause I'm sure even China isn't sure how high it really is).
