My crazy cousin texted me today, she is the same one who criticized police officers and Republicans during Thanksgiving. She texted me today, saying that police are not trustworthy with minorities and women. She is upset because her brother wants to be a police officer. What would you tell her if you were related to her?
My father’s solution was that we all had to “get along” with our crazy sister. He never said a word to her about getting along with the rest of us. That’s because you can’t fix or reason with crazy. He understood that. You can only “get along.” That means agreeing with whatever the crazy person says. Our eventual fix was to have nothing whatsoever to do with the crazy sister. That, I am afraid, is the path of least resistance. You can’t reason with her. You can’t educate her. You either get along or you distance yourself. For our sanity, it was distancing ourselves. It has worked for about forty years.
What would you tell her if you were related to her?
“You’re nuts, never text me again”.
I would tell her to seek help. And then I’d change my phone number.
I would ignore her and do everything possible to get her out of my life.
