The Defense Department has announced expanded Commissary, Military Service Exchange and MWR access Jan. 1 and established a standard for physical access to military installations.
Veterans and Primary Family Caregivers who are eligible and want to take advantage of in-person benefits must have a Veterans Health Identification Card, or VHIC. Primary Family Caregivers must have an eligibility letter from VA’s Office of Community Care.

Interesting. I did the same thing but didn’t have that experience at all. You can opt out of email ads and protecting your online travels is just a basic effort these days.
A script blocker program and ad blocker is a must these days. Scripts are how most viruses and malware get into our computer systems. The script blockers do require some interactive time and there’s a learning curve to using it effectively but it’s amazing how much junk gets to your system without it. I can even view some pay sites by blocking certain javascripts. I know it sounds like a hassle and frankly; at first it is. I also back up my settings on a regular basis so if the system crashes, like a total hard drive failure, I don’t have to start all over again. We use locks and keys on our homes and cars; why should the Internet be any different to prevent unwanted “guests” from entering? Which reminds me; it’s time to do a back up. ;)
LOL! That is the way I read it initially as well. Butt, 90 miles probably too far to offset the possible savings.
Walmart wasn’t around us stateside when I was in, but we called Kmart the enlisted PX.

That is true but you do not pay sales tax. Yet.
I’m in Fairbanks and have a VA pass already to get on Fort Wainwright. I’m definitely going to shop and compare. It’s a bit of a hassle to get on post, so that will factor in.

I was wondering about that. I'm sure they are a stickler about guns, etc. Haven't been any military base in decades...
The VA clinic is on Ft. Wainwright, so I go on base at least 2 times a year because of that. I get a VA pass 1 time a year, and only 1 time did I get a inspection. Even then they did a cursory look, but I wouldn’t want to have a gun going in. Not worth the risk.

Groceries may be cheaper, I’m not sure. But the problem that I’ve seen with the Navy Exchange (based on their sales flyer) is that they only sell top of the line brands for a lot of items like TVs, sunglasses, etc. You would be better off to go to a big box store. I think that’s a disservice to lower ranking members.
Excellent description. I said basically the same thing you did only much less detailed. I’ve been retired from the Navy for 21 years.
40 years ago when I was in the military they were great price wise for brands but not now that the regular stores have sales etc...
I can remember buying Carter’s baby clothes for my children at good prices from the BX compared to Montgomery Wards, Sears, Penneys ...I wouldn’t have paid the prices at the other stores back then...
we brought some groceries at the local stores...
