Trudeau victory prompts ‘Wexit’ talk in Canada’s West

Confused by Brexit? Get ready for “Wexit.”

Political leaders representing a large chunk of Canada are talking about breaking off from the rest of the country in the wake of Justin Trudeau’s re-election victory — and this time they’re not primarily in French-speaking Quebec, long known for its independent streak.

Instead, it’s the country’s western, oil-dependent provinces fueling the breathless talk of secession, amid a perception that Trudeau and eastern urban liberals are calling the shots at their expense. And it's emerging as one of Trudeau’s most complicated headaches as the Prime Minister moves toward the start of his second term next month.

Story Continued Below

“Is it real? Yeah. People are mad,” Randy Hoback, a Conservative Party member of Parliament in central Saskatchewan told POLITICO. “I’ve never seen it like this.”

Citizens in the Western provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan agitated for political change in Ottawa over the last year as attempts to build a coastal pipeline expansion continued to falter and as farmers got trounced by trade tiffs with China.

Please.

Canadians have no balls. Not in Quebec. Not in the West.

Time for a Bear Claw and some Poutine. Honey? We’re out of bagged milk.

I used to have a positive view of Canadians, because my exposure to them had been only with Albertans, primarily from Calgary. Great, friendly people and wonderful to work with.

A few years ago I started having to work with Ontarois and Quebecers. What a bunch of sarcastic, back-stabbing, self-absorbed sphincters, each and every one of them, but especially the ones from Toronto.

They’ve made me so mad over the years I can’t listen to The Guess Who, Gordon Lightfoot, Rush, or BTO anymore. As soon as they come on the radio I see all those d-bags in my head and I have to hit “Next”.

The only thing worse than the French are French Canadians.

I have several friends involved, and am in the fb group. Apparently Canada has something in place that allows them to leave.

All good points. But keep in mind that Alberta has far more autonomy in Canada's confederation arrangement than they would have in the U.S.

Interestingly, Canada today probably functions a lot like the U.S. would operate if we respected our own Tenth Amendment.

A Trudeau spokesperson said the government is considering ways to incorporate western perspectives into the incoming government.

Yeah, right. Kind of like here in the US, pencil-neck incorporating any dissent into his star chamber trials.

The “First Nations” in eastern Canada would never stand for it.
Too much “gimme” from western provinces...

Do some research, Provinces of Canada joining the United States were contemplated and provided for in the first constructions of this country and the table already has been set.

Interesting and little known but it is there

2. Independence for western Canada seems more realistic, but I don’t see that ever happening if the regions seceding from Canada are landlocked.
~~~
Interestingly, back in the early ‘90s when I was learning a few things and becoming slightly less ignorant about US’s northern neighbor after the Quebecois independence thing had flared up, it was British Columbia that they had said was most likely to want to join the U.S. But I suspect that in the intervening decades they shifted a bit toward that coastal liberalism phenomenon.
Speaking of the 1990s, that was the same general time frame when some folks in Montana were discussing seccession (in response to the Clinton/Democrat 'assault weapons' ban). Article II, Section 2 of the Montana State Constitution apparently reserves the right to secede:
The people have the exclusive right of governing themselves as a free, sovereign, and independent state. They may alter or abolish the constitution and form of government whenever they deem it necessary.
pffft, as an ex-canadian, I was part of the western separatist movement in BC. That movement will never die among Albertans and upper and northern BC canucks..
The people I met last summer from Alberta to the west, think their govepis full of commies. Their votes are outnumbered by the commies in Montreal.
“The “First Nations” in eastern Canada would never stand for it.”
I’m from western canada. Heck, just like Natives in America, they got a sweet deal back even in 2006 before I left:
FREE LAND, FREE WELFARE, PAY NO TAXES, FREE EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN. AND $5000 check every month. Back then, I worked for KFC back in high school and it was free delivery to the reservation AND 30% discount.
I almost married a FN chick and if did, I would be on easy street...
I was born in Saskatoon. Most of the people there have the Minnesota attitude. They wont vote unless there’s something for them such as free stuff etc..
Hell yes! Win-Win. We get rid of the cancer on the body politic that New England has always been and pick up 3 new states that are reasonable and which actually value western civilization. Where do we sign?
The wouldn't join the US, or if they did, they'd vote Democrat - at least until we gave them nationalized health care, maybe longer. There's a difference between being the Texas of Canada and being Texas. Bavaria is the Texas of Germany, but if they joined the US, they wouldn't necessarily vote like the Texas of the US.
It seems like Canada's Conservatives are in the position that America's Democrats were in during the the 20th century. The Democrats had a better chance of winning if they nominated a Southerner, but they really didn't want to nominate a Southerner. Canada's Conservatives have a better chance of winning if they nominate somebody from the eastern half of the country, but they don't really want to do that.
Harper was the exception that proves the rule. He was able to get elected as a Westerner, but he was so unpopular in other parts of the country that they voted for the first available high school drama teacher in order to get rid of him. If his party finds somebody who is competent and from Ontario to run next time, they could win.
Canada splitting up is probably more likely than another American Civil War. If it happens, though, we may end up stuck with poor, dependent Atlantic Canada, rather than the well-off West. It would be an interesting test case for what would happen if the US broke up, as some people seem to think it should. Hopefully, we won't break up before they do.
