Ram passes Silverado in truck sales

DETROIT – Fiat Chrysler's Ram pickup unseated General Motors' Chevrolet Silverado as the second-best selling vehicle in the U.S. during the first nine months of the year. With a United Auto Workers strike underway that has shut down GM's pickup production, the Ram likely will beat the Silverado for the full year for the first time, according to auto sales experts.

At the end of September, the Ram had a lead of nearly 52,000 vehicles, according to company sales figures released Wednesday. So far this year, U.S. buyers snapped up 461,115 Rams, an increase of 23% over the same time last year. GM sold 409,316 Silverados during the first nine months, down 3.6% from a year ago. The Allen County GM plant produces some of the Silverado models.

I’ve been seeing a few more Ram’s out in the patch lately and area dominated by GM and Ford. Right now I’ve got a 2019 GMC Z-71 with the 6.2 420 HP gas. They take a pretty good beating and I’ve never had one leave me stranded. If GM would put the side boxes in the fenders like Ram has it would be perfection. I use the bed of the truck too much to put a tool box in it.

A very large part of GM is owned by the UAW.

Thanks to Obama.

I really like the looks of the Tacoma, I just wish they would give it a little more HP. Running gear on them is hell for stout.

So who is number one? And by how much?

There's a chart in this popup-infested website: http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/us-pickup-truck-sales-figures-by-model/

In Q3 2019, Ford sold 214,176 units, Ram sold 161,635, and Chevy sold 155,482.

So Ford is the number one selling truck in America.

However, if you add GMC's 66,199 to Chevy's 155,482, GM sold 221,681 full size pickup trucks in Q3 2019, beating Ford by 7,505 units.

It's always been the Chevy-GMC split that let Ford claim to be #1, when in fact Ford and GM (Chevy+GMC) have always been neck and neck.

We wound up getting a new F150 crew cab short bed with the heavy tow package to tow a smaller tagalong RV. I think it’s good, as currently fitted out, for up to 10.5k to 11k maybe but really didn’t want to go as big or heavy as a 5th wheel (although the space would be great!). Also, the short beds can’t do 5th wheel. Plus, I’m just not that confident in my towing capacities for those nice big units. The truck is already a tank in its own right.

The Rams really are nice looking now... sleeker, more streamlined., dressier. Plus, I’ve always wanted anything with a Hemi in it. Talk about nostalgia...

I know trucks are very much subject to personal preference, but I’m on my fourth Dodge/RAM truck and I love ‘em. My 2018 Power Wagon, which was a “touch” on the pricey side, is the very best yet, but I also own a Ford F-450 King Ranch crew cab dually for my heavy towing needs and it’s a helluva truck too.

Ok, I’ll give you that one. Aztec’s were and still are one of the ugliest vehicles one the road.

If you don’t believe me google it, but the base engine in the Silverado starting for the 2019 model is an in-line 4 cylinder gas engine.

310 hp [231 kW] @ 5600 rpm
348 lb-ft of torque [471 Nm] @ 1500 rpm
Paired with a 8-speed automatic transmission

I have a mid size Colorado with a 4 cylinder turbo diesel that develops more torque.

If I had a dog as ugly as a gm truck I would have to shave its ass and teach it to walk backwards.

Except for the transmission! Was that the butter-face edition. There are no minor transmission problems. I bought a new 95 Dodge Ram, with a manual transmission, 4WD, County-Roads Dept. Edition. It costs me 18K because I sprang for cloth seats. The only thing i wish I added was a limited slip differential. I would buy it again today if it was available. The gentrification of the pick up truck has moved me into full size work vans. Is there any pickup available today with a stick shift? I can pass on the cup warmers.

Because it's a better truck? Or what?

It was rated 2019 truck of the year I think.

Toyota would do very well to bring back their little no bells or whistles pickups. We’d buy one in a minute.

I suspect that if you had a dog you’d need to hang a pork chop around your neck just to get him to play with you. :)

You a Ford guy?

Both are good trucks but the Ram is simply a better buy. The Ram offers a quieter and more comfortable ride, GMC used to. The Ram has a Diesel that get 24-27 mpg and excellent power. The Ram has a 5.7L Hemi that can get 24-27mpg highway below 60mph (it kicks 8 cylinders down to 4). For some reasons GMC made the seats in the Sierra fairly stiff.
