It was recently reported that US President Donald Trump wants to buy Greenland, but what would he actually be getting for his money? Umar Ali takes a look at Greenlands mineral resources, whether they are worth mining, and why the US could want them.
The Kvanefjeld project
Greenland currently only has one major mining project, the Kvanefjeld rare earth project launched in 2007. The project is centred on the Ilimaussaq alkaline complex in southwest Greenland, measuring approximately 8km x 15km, it is being developed by Australian company Greenland Minerals.
The Kvanefjeld project is thought to be one of the worlds biggest undeveloped resources of rare earth elements, with JORC 2012-compliant resources of one billion tonnes across three zones in the Ilimaussaq complex; Kvanefjeld, Sørensen and Zone 3.
It is claimed that the area is the worlds the sixth-largest deposit of uranium and the second-largest deposit of rare-earth oxides, with 11.1 million tonnes (Mt) of rare earth oxide and 593 million pounds of uranium. The complex also hosts a rare rock-type known as lujavrite.
These rare earth resources could be invaluable for the US, with the US-China trade dispute calling the US supply of rare earths into question. Rare earth metals are an essential material for electronics and China currently supplies around 95% of the worlds demand for rare earths, so it could be in the US interests to secure a supply of these metals.
The Kvanefjeld deposit, which is the only part of the project currently being developed, is estimated to hold 143Mt of measured resources alone.
The projects pre-feasibility study was completed in May 2012, with the feasibility study being completed in May 2015. The mine is estimated to have an initial production life of 37 years, based on an ore processing rate of three million tonnes per annum.

Wikipedia says the Australian company Greenland Minerals and Energy acquired the area in 2007....
In 2017 the major shareholder of GME was Shenghe Resources Holding Co. Ltd, listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange
The mine is also in very close proximity to water making shipping unusually easy.

Greenland warns EU may miss out on its mineral wealth

Greenland’s prime minister warned the European Union he could scrap a preliminary...
Im not sure what the point of this is, they’re not going to sell it to us.
We don’t have to buy it Husker. As one of wizards if smarts I listen to noted (maybe Scott Adams) with the salesman/deal making mentality of PDJT, it could be a long term lease of all mineral rights w/ a percentage to Denmark if profits / ton etc etc. The agreement could take form on paper similar or much different to what I just typed. The bottom line is it would be exclusive business deal & China doesn’t get the mine, but they do get the shaft...
“...a rare rock-type known as lujavrite.”
Misspelled leverite?
Yes it does when you recognize that any project will be tied up in court for over a decade thanks to the eco nazis.
Repeal some eco nazi laws and regulations, get our financial house in order, then buy it.
Just few short years ago Afghanistan was reported as rare earth heaven.
Guess no one cared......
Too may critters to clear there.
I thought it was spelled, leaverite.
Either way would be OK, I guess.
If we don’t buy Greenland, then either China, Russia or the Saudis will.
I love the lack of History which the Libs show every day. They either do not know or conveniently forgot The Louisiana purchase, purchase of Alaska and the Gadsden purchase.
Remember Seward’s Folly!!
Exactly!
Greenland would prove to be an excellent investment, not only for possible mineral rights, but for it's strategic location in controlling the Arctic.
I realize that Greenland is a possession of Denmark.
However, maybe the 56,117 residents of Greenland(2017) would like to have a choice in who actually OWNS them and their land.
;)
President Trump wants to buy Greenland because he can.
I mean literally, he can.
In typical act of sanctimonious EU virtue signaling, the Danes have given official title to Greenland to its 56,000 residents but The Danes have veto power over all decisions and Greenland is a defacto protectorate.
90 percent of Greenlands population overwhelmingly and enthusiastically favors acquisition by the United States
This is no pipe dream - it could seriously and amazingly become a reality and the Danish government is seriously worried as Greenland costs them a lot of money and, like all EU socialist governments, they are strapped for cash.
And in todays world where the concept of nationalism has been vilified and the signature feature of all truly virtuous people is acting against your own self interest ( the greater the act of going against your self interest, the greater your virtue) a majority of the PC indoctrinated Danes are surprisingly unconcerned about getting rid of Greenland if it means getting enough money so they can still retire at the age of 50.
