President Donald Trump claimed Thursday he was not happy with the crowd at his campaign rally for chanting send her back, after he had goaded the North Carolina audience with a fiery attack on Rep. Ilhan Omar.
"I was not happy with it. I disagree with it. But again, I didn't say that. They did. But I disagree with it," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, adding that he started speaking very quickly in an attempt to silence the rally attendees.
Prior to the audience at Greenville's East Carolina University breaking into their chant Wednesday night, the president tore into Omar, mischaracterizing past controversial statements by the Minnesota Democrat related to the 9/11 terror attacks and Al Qaeda that conservatives have seized upon in recent months.
Just before the incendiary refrain broke out, Trump accused Omar of having "a history of launching vicious, anti-Semitic screeds," and then silently gazed out over the crowd for roughly 15 seconds until the cheers of "send her back" abated.
"It was quite a chant, and I felt a little bit badly about it," Trump said on Thursday, later hailing the number of supporters inside the "packed arena" and boasting of the "tremendous support" and "great energy" enjoyed by the Republican Party.
"I say there is far more energy on the right than there is on the left," he said, adding, "I think we have far more support than they do and I think we have far more energy than they do. And were going to have a very interesting election. But I was not happy when I heard that chant."

Fake news in high gear over this!
It wasn’t my favorite chant either
I always like “lock her up”
Truly a stupid and VERY bad move, Mr. President!
Hope the crowd chants it louder next time around.
I understand why he needs to disavow it... but WE don’t.
The Democrat/Left wants so much for this to appear to be an apology ... to take the spotlight off their Party’s self-destruction. As with all their other attempts at a coup it’s not going to work. Not with a man like Trump!
Possible take, just speculation on my part.
Trump is actually going to go after her legally with the DOJ but he is publicly disavowing comments that would give excuse to a federal judge to overturn or dismiss the case.
We are not gandhi-esque followers of Trump. He is riding the tiger. We are the tiger. Trump is entitled to his wrong opinion on this.
Trump didn’t want to send back Omar? That’s it I am not voting for him again. /sarc
Ditto
Whenever he says something cringeworthy, I am reminded to wait 48 hours at which point something comes out and the statement was actually brilliant and the Dems blow themselves up again.
Send her back.
Freeper LS pointed out that if there were a real investigation to prosecute “Omar” (possibly not her real name), then the President would likely be advised to refrain from public statements that might be used by her defense, to allege undue influence (like they did in the Beau Bergdahl case).
In reference to the allegation that she had “married” her brother, President Trump said yesterday “I’m sure someone is looking into it.”
RE: It wasnt my favorite chant either
LET HER LEAVE would have been a better chant.
That’s what I’m wondering as well. Perhaps he’s baiting more traps?
Another question I had was would words from the president be enough to get a real case against her citizenship dismissed by a federal judge?
Trump is trying to play this one by the book. He says things that are provocative but true. Telling them they should leave is different from sending them back - without due process. That’s the key - without due process. I’m sure Trump knows Ilhan Omar is here illegally. Once the Justice Dept. files charges, THEN she’ll be sent back, or to jail - all done legally.
BINGO!
