Senate Republicans Hint at Overriding Any Trump Veto on Tariffs

Senate Republicans pushed back on President Donald Trump -- including the threat of a veto override -- after he scoffed at the possibility that members of his own party would try to block his plan to impose a tariff on Mexico over concerns about the potential economic fallout.

Senator Kevin Cramer, a North Dakota Republican, predicted that the Senate would have enough votes to override a presidential veto of any measure that would keep Trump’s tariffs on Mexico from going into effect June 10.

“You’ve heard of people who are war weary,” Cramer said. “Senate Republicans are tariff weary.”

Trump, speaking Tuesday at a news conference with U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May in London, said he didn’t think his party would scuttle his plan to impose 5% tariffs on all goods imported from Mexico, unless that country takes unspecified steps to stop illegal migration from Central America.

“I think if they do, it’s foolish,” Trump said. “There’s nothing more important than borders.”

Few lawmakers say they would support Trump’s tariff plan, which includes escalating the levies on Mexican goods every month until reaching 25% in October.

Fine, let them override. If the vote is not diluted enough by the ignorance of voting populous or the corruption of the election system; they MUST be held accountable by voting public.
I say forget tariffs. Surcharge all remittances to South of the border from the US. I’m certain that will not cause any pain to the economy. Perhaps enough of a surcharge will force ‘self-deportations’.
I am not certain, does that require Congressional approval?

Talk is cheap. They would have to prove it.

If you doubted the old cliche that said the Republican Party is the party of big business then all doubt is now erased.

The Republican Free Traitor Party.

This would end up in SCOTUS. I doubt congress can restrict this Presidential power.

I say forget tariffs.

The rest of the world uses tariffs to their trade advantage and thinks the US is crazy for not retaliating against abject mercantilism. I am sick of the ignorance of the average American.

Time for Trump to declare martial
law. Shut the border down and
nothing gets through (on land).
All of Mexico’s exports would
have to be shipped. It could
really snarl things up, as Mexico
is short on boats.

law.

“NO, it takes 2/3 votes in each house to override a presidential veto. “

That’ what I said.

More total votes than impeachment.

I don’t oppose more military on the border. But you can’t just yell close the border. People walking can get thru openings and gaps.

Trump needs to just go ahead and use his full powers as president.

He’s mucked around the edges on this far too long.
