The millions of people the Stalin system killed did not disappear into thin air: they were buried typically in mass graves that Russia today has inherited but whose people and officials do not know what to do with them. As a result, they remain a continuing wound on the body of the country, Anastasiya Platonova of Takiye dela says.
The Soviet system has left behind “cemeteries of the victims of political repressions: mass burials of those shot as well as small cemeteries of the camps and special settlements,” she continues. Some have been studied, but most have not, despite the interests of relatives and society in dealing with this legacy.
Once people began to learn the details of the deaths of their ancestors, their first question in many cases she says was “where are they buried?” During the 1990s, some 120 mass graves were identified, Irina Fliga of Memorial says; but taking the next step of identifying individual victims was hampered by lack of records and the resistance of the authorities and the church.
Moreover, many cases – and Platonova documents some of these – officials had already constructed buildings or roads over the sites, making it even more difficult to treat the victims of Stalin with the respect that they deserve. And things have only gotten worse in recent years with the FSB and the Russian Orthodox Church throwing up roadblocks of various kinds.
Some other countries whose populations were victimized by Stalin’s system have shown that it is possible to address this problem more adequately, with Lithuania and Poland being two prominent examples where governments have taken active roles in protecting the graves and identifying as many of the bodies as possible, Platonova says.
Unfortunately, in Russia, one can count on one’s hands the few cases of professional exhumation and personal identification. But what may be even worse, Flige adds, is that “in Russia, there is still no public demand for the personal identification of those who were shot.” There is no agreement among Russians even that every victim should have the right to a grave.
Turn them into tourist spots for US Socialist so they can see how its done. Should be very lucrative for the Russians.
And yes, America will not far behind them, on our own road to judgement.

This brings to mind that in the 1970s, Bill Ayers and the Weathermen radicals had the same thing planned for the USA. He estimated they would have to “liquidate” 25 million people to bring in their Socialist Paradise.
It comes from the Spanish Civil War and the Franco years. Just a couple of years ago they tried to get the government to open up records on mass burials and they refused.
I live in Spain. Less than 500 meters from my house is the N340, which used to be the main east-west coastal road in Spain before the A7 was finished. The N340 was also the main road for refugees trying to flee to safety in Almeria from the attacks on Malaga. They were still finding skeletons along that road in the 1960’s.

This is one of those major WW2 stories that has gone down the Memory Hole. The general hell of a sort US GI’s couldn't imagine that Soviet soldiers went through was productive of producing not just mass PTSD but mass psychopathology. Infantry were literally driven forward into mass German automatic weapons fire as a normal tactic to tie down German infantry while flanking attacks were conducted to cut them off. The pockets were then eliminated by more mass attacks. Any wavering in the ranks would be met with NKVD Troops used as rear closers moving in and firing on the reluctant units and the political officer would conduct a purge after any wavering in attacks or what was seen as an inadmissible combat failure. Little or no provision was made beyond a very spartan scale for the messing and quartering of ground troops so many lived lives that were truly nasty, brutish and short. As an example, during the battle and siege of Stalingrad over 10,000 death sentences imposed by field court marshals were carried out. These are the executions which were done under color of law. Most Russians believe the actual number of off hand shootings was two or three times that number. As a safety valve measure when Soviets captured territory back the soldiery was allowed to run amok encouraged by officers and political commissars. When German, Hungarian or Romanian territory was reached the soldiery were encouraged to loot, rape, murder and destroy as a strategic tool to effectively demoralized the mass of enemy civilians so the Soviets and their stooges would have no problems with occupation of those lands.
Virtually no real first person narratives of low ranking enlisted people in the ground forces of the USSR exist. The Soviets made sure of that. Only some sanitized narratives by a few junior officers saw light of day. The bulk of the masses of Soviet war memorabilia was generated by higher officers and much of it is extremely tendentious.
Using the term “inherited” is a semantic issue.
