They had stalled but it is debatable whether they thought they were "in trouble". Certainly Hitler did not think they were at that point. The generals probably knew it was going to get dicey but they were not about to tell him that.

Dragging another enemy into the fray was not logical. Unless you thought they would fall quickly and you wanted some of their stuff.
